Some Engineering aspects of temple. Chola country is in the Kaveri delta region, full of rivers, rivulets & canals making the soil loose. Hence it is tough to find a place strong enough to hold such a big structure. Kunjaramallan did a great job in finding such a rocky place
It is estimated that this place can hold the weight of 162 tonne per sq.KM, sufficient enough to hold the temple.

The granite stones are joined together not with any adhesives like lime, but using groove joint, interlocking joint, ball & socket joint etc.
The joints coupled with the weight of the stones are holding the structure together for 1000s of years. #PeriyaKovil

ஆட்சியதிகாரத்தை விட்டுத்தர சரபோஜி விதித்த நிபந்தனை ஒன்றுதான், அது பெரிய கோவிலை விட்டு பிரிட்டிஷார் வெளியேற வேண்டுமென்பது. அப்படி மீட்கப்பட்ட பெரிய கோவிலில் சரபோஜி பல புனரமைப்பு வேலைகளைச் செய்தார், சிதைந்த பகுதிகளைச் சீரமைத்தார். செங்கல் தளம் அமைத்தார்.

That Aurangazeb was a tyrant is a well known fact, despite the new found love for him from the liberals.He was also a crook who did lot of weird things to prove his authority. An example for this is, during one of his Deccan campaigns, he sent his general Zulfikar Khan down south
The general went with one of Aurangazeb’s shoes which was studded with diamonds & other precious stones.The shoe was mounted in a Howdah atop an elephant.The procession went through kingdom after kingdom.Whenever it reached a capital, the King should receive it with full honours

He eats it straight from his hand and watches Connor beam at him like he'd just hung the sun. Kisses his fingertips. Connor reaches to scratch him behind his ear with a pleased little smile, then feeds him another blackberry.

They're sweet and tart, and the honey is rich.
Connor refuses to eat any more until Hank swears up and down that he's full. Then he folds himself into his side, takes a honeycomb out of the pot, and bites right into it like it's a loaf of bread. Honey oozes out, drips down his chin.

Hank coughs to cover up a startled laugh.
"Hungry," he explains, flushing when it becomes apparent that Hank is amused by the sight.

Hank rubs a hand through his curls. "Well don't stop on my account. It's good to see you eat."

Connor looks at him shyly. "I like honey."

Hank smiles. "Is that why you taste like it?"

On the auspicious occasion of #MahaShivaratri, here's a thread on one of the grandest temples build for Lord Shiva. The Brihadeeshwara temple at Thanjavur.
Built in the early 10th century by the great Raja Raja Chola, the Rajarajeshwaram as it was then called set new architectural standards for Temples to emulate.

We can now say with certainty that its sheer size & grandeur remains unmatched after a 1000 years of its construction.
The Keralantakan Gopuram is one of the 2 Gopurams at the entrance of the Brihadeeshwara temple.

It was built by Raja Raja Chola after be brought a part of the Chera ruled Kerala under his realm.
