My view since mid-Dec has been clear: this is a Govt we should take at face value. The divergence narrative is real & about worldview, less a ploy or negotiating tactic. There's even a scrubbing exercise in Whitehall to ensure Govt doesn't accidentally agree to alignment 1/3
Can @BorisJohnson agree to LPF? Tough, as Govt thinks this boils down to subsidies & that it has a better record than EU. Australia/no deal? Perhaps. After all, this is about democracy, not economics, ministers say. Willingness to accept collateral damage & pain quite high 2/3
The people at top of Govt are no fans of EU. Big believers in idea of doing things differently. EU, 27 & others could make a mistake if they don't recognise that nature of Govt & game has changed in phase 2. 3/3

After spending the week in Bxl, I can report that the mood among senior EU officials regarding Monday's start of UK trade talks is extremely gloomy. Expectations have adjusted that EU might end up trading with UK like US or China, on WTO terms. A thread on how I see things 1/
I agree with most in Bxl that odds of no deal are rising & space for a deal is shrinking - & rapidly. This is largely driven by @10DowningStreet super-hardline on divergence, & the need to square this with EU's expectations on the level playing field 2/
The EUs now-final mandate has 3 major asks of UK on LPF: 1) dynamic alignment on state aid; 2) a commitment to not go below env, social, labour & fiscal standards that will be in place at the end of the transition; & 3) an aim to maintain regulatory coherence with EU in future 3/

Lots of ridicule around idea of post-Brexit "Global Britain". But is @vonderleyen & @EmmanuelMacron idea of a "Geopolitical Europe" any more credible? Important week in Bxl as EU leaders gather to discuss EU budget. Will they put their money where their mouth is? Doubt it. Thread
First point is that it's largely an inward looking debate. The "frugal-4" are isolated. They want to reduce amount they pay into budget (no more than 1.00% of EU27GNI) & secure a rebate. But Germany is softer ft.com/content/7faae6… via @financialtimes
Berlin's only condition is a limit of 1% of GNI; that cd be 1.09% in practice. The frugal-4 also can't hide behind UK any longer, which used to be this group's most hawkish member. On opposite side, a group of 15 "cohesion" states are resisting any cuts in amounts they receive 3/

So we're leaving today. The UK now has a Govt whose ONLY yardstick will be the time it takes to do the trade deal. EVERYTHING will be subordinate to that. And the EU that frankly sees the whole process as a big pain in its ass. Thread on how I see things after chats w both sides
EU will publish its mandate on Monday. It won't have the narrow focus that some in Bxl wanted; instead it will speak to litany of issues that the member states care about - trade/LPF; fish; aviation; transport; internal/external security; foreign policy & much else besides 1/
As I've tweeted before, the risk of a broad mandate is that it creates greater scope for issue linkage -
so a zero tariff/zero quota access deal gets linked not just to progress on LPF & fish, but other (more peripheral) issues that bother EU capitals too 2/

For years now, cancer patients have faced double jeopardy: their malignancies have endangered their ability to carry out their pre-morbid jobs, and when they lose those benefits, their treatments become financially toxic, often to the point of bankruptcy.

This is seldom a matter of just forsaking luxuries. I have seen patients struggle to pay their electric bill vs. obtain life-preserving medication.

Through twisted logic, they are sick enough to need treatment, but too sick to maintain the jobs that cover that treatment.

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.
