The @metpoliceuk are rolling out their first operational use of live facial recognition surveillance in Stratford, east London, today.
They have deployed a single van with its cameras pointed at the entrance to Stratford shopping centre, capturing the faces of people walking out towards the station.
About 30 police are standing around in clusters, peering at smartphones to which facial recognition positive matches are sent, to decide whether to make a stop.
Commander Mark McEwan said there were about 5,000 faces on the watchlist. “They will be people who are wanted for serious criminality such as grievous bodily harm, and we will also be looking for people who are wanted by the courts.”
“It’s a tipping point,” said @silkiecarlo of @BigBrotherWatch, who warned facial recognition could soon be rolled out to cctv networks across London. “Over the 10 uses the Met did between 2016 and up to today 93% of the alerts have been of innocent people misidentified.”
