When the 2016 election was deemed illegitimate and efforts to nullify it failed the system was destabilized. To restabilize it everyone has to let the 2020 election reboot the system. The nightmare scenario is if the loser declares 2020 unacceptable as well.
Somewhere along the line govt got too big and important to surrender gracefully. Elections should excite no more urgency than the World Series. If you lose you feel bad, but there's next year. When the ideologues and apparatchiks made govt existential they also it dangerous.
The political class created this problem when they became too important to lose office. That's never a good thing.
