A few moments in this platitudinous speech stood out to me.
At the very moment when America’s most illiberal President since Andrew Johnson is attacking the free press and turning the DOJ into his own private fiefdom to protect his friends and punish his enemies, Pompeo says this.
Pompeo helped Trump shake down Ukraine’s President for a phony investigation of Biden by withholding military aid, then he’s got the gall to tell a story about how much love a wounded Ukrainian soldier supposedly showed him.
One almost wonders if that soldier wasn’t expressing respect as much as he was trying to make a point to an important, but corrupt and unreliable ally.

The chair of the Hopewell County, VA GOP stood outside the home of a Democratic congressman brandishing an assault weapon. He says it was "a protest." This is an indicator of just how radicalized the GOP has become at the local level. vpm.org/news/articles/…
It would be terrifying enough to look out your window and see this sight. But it adds something to the picture when you know the person with that gun is not some rando, but instead the *leader* of your county's GOP.
Here's a thread on a theme I've been hammering at for quite a while now. The institutional rot in the GOP has worked its way down to (or up from?) the local level. Trump is just the tip of the illiberal iceberg.

24 hours after 17 people were murdered at Parkland High, President Trump posed for this smiling picture with police officers and politicians in Broward County, where he stopped for the day on his way to his golf course. He then selected this photo to be his Twitter banner.
The juxtaposition of his serious face profile pic and his big old grin is just so haunting in this context. Half of the people he’s posing with know enough (or feel enough?) to look somber. The other half just mug it up and say “cheese!”
This isn’t just some liberal photographer’s game of gotcha. Trump intentionally posed like this and chose to post it while those slain Parkland children had not even been buried yet. Who does this?

The Soviet Union was a complicated place that America's Cold War culture turned into a monstrous monolith. A person in the 80s who talked about the country with nuance was not necessarily an apologist for totalitarianism.
Just as someone who said positive things about the US in the 1980s was not necessarily an apologist for McCarthyism or American foreign policy in Latin America.
Also, I just remembered that Gorbachev, the person who was the leader of the Soviet Union when Bernie visited there, spoke at my college graduation in 1990. We all applauded him. So does that mean the people who invited him and who applauded him are totalitarian monsters?

Here's the deal #America; whatever you had before, forget it. That is all gone. The moment Trump violated the law and nothing was done (day 1), rule of law in the States was over. The Presidential lawyer claims the President is above the law. It's been 1,000 days since then.
In those 1000 days, the President has whittled the 3 branches of government down to 1.5. There is the Executive (which OWNS the Judicial, for the most part, and the Senate), vs. the House. Without major legislation or changes, the President has crippled checks and balances.
The President owns the Justice Department. He owns the Supreme Court and Senate. The Reps continue to pack all courts with Trumpers (44 in a single day!). This is like John Gotti being in complete charge of the Justice Dept. while they investigated him. What does this mean?

Seriously? Does anyone really believe that the media didn't know about the conspiracy to frame the president? Ha! Not only did they know about the coup, but they're leading the coup.
But that's ridiculous, you say. The press doesn't have the power to use government, courts, and Congress to illegally oust a sitting president. The media could never execute a coup without government. True, and government could never launch and execute a coup without the media.

I know many are wondering, why Congress can’t just figure this out and reach a deal? There are a couple key reasons why we are here:
FIRST: Republicans in Washington spent an entire year trying to take away people's health care and pass tax breaks for the wealthy, leaving a mountain of bipartisan priorities to languish.
Now they want to move ahead as if it is business as usual and to not even attempt to govern. This partisan, do-nothing approach cannot become the new normal. cnn.com/2018/01/18/pol…
