Quick thread on "colorblindness" and principles. Some people, the identity politicians, really hate the concept of "not seeing color." Others think they are just "following the data" (of course, we can do some circles here)
The core argument by people who can summarize their position of "I don't see color" is usually that they want a society in which the social significance of skin color, etc. is minimized. It's not a denial of racism or even the need for centering race in a discussion of unfairness
The problem the identity politicians have is one of means and ends. For the colorblind (CB) perspective, the *end* is a just society in which skin color is treated essentially ike eye color, it can be "recognized" but no one gives a shit.
For the identitarian perspective, it's not usually clear whether identity politics is a means or an end. You may seem claims like, "but we can't realistically ignore racial differences given the past few hundred years." That may be fair, but that's not a vision of a future.
For the identity politic crowd, history is the motivating lens, which they treat not as one realization of many possible trajectories but as an absolute guideline for how humanity works. In essence, they will be permanently shackled to a past that we continue to move further from
To the extent they have a vision of the future, it's not typically "let's focus on race for now, then gradually move to CB in the future." No, they want a future in which every difference is maximally "acknowledged" and continues to given more power in discretized ways.
You'll note the identity crowd also hates the "let's move on" soundbytes. In some cases, this is indeed annoying, but follow the end...they will continue to be annoyed by it because it's orthogonal to their worldview where identity is central.
The Social Justice crowd are not game theorists. They don't have great forward thinking or have a sense of what the equilibrium position is of their ideas. In many cases, it's not clear that they care. Fundamentally, they aren't that interested in a better future.
When you play a game of generating more refined tribes, eventually everyone loses, even if you do lip service to the tribes getting along. But Social Justice is a "now" game, one obsessed with power and revanchism with no articulated targets or goals or promising end.
If you are not convinced by this, consider what data would convince them that their movement reached its "goal." Does that even make sense as a vision? Or, will it be more refined problematizing and "doing better." Your guess...
A few points here on the Sachs references (1) the papers range from irrelevant to ridiculous, identifying a few hyper-controlled college situations. Others, like Neville et al., is a Critical Theory paper that just goes in circles and misrepresents CB to tell us why it is harmful
It's the typical stuff here, "preserving the status quo," rejection of White Privilege (see below), denying lived experiences. You've seen it all. Not Theory = bad. This all makes sense to Crticial Theory but they never deal with how their entire worldview is contended with.
(2) It's interesting how the Social Constructivists become interested in the rigidity of data. Of course, as they note, data may tell a story that reflects a particular culture's way of internalizing and processing information.
(3) Ethics and "what works" doesn't go hand in hand. This should be self-explanatory to people.
It's unimaginable to SocJus that a poor trailer park kid with one parent can deny their "White Privilege" and not be part of the problem. That they can't just have a black friend without "acknowledging" this and that (to whatever end) and other rituals they declare.
At the end of the day, we need stop entertaining their delusions and paranoia. They are crackpots. They also don't have a track record of fixing anything nor a displayed desire to do so. And if people don't like CB, tough shit.
You're going to have to deal with the fact that us liberal CB lefties are among the least racist ideologies. Less than SocJus. Less than white supremacy, less than Black Supremacy and other "my people" groups. We want a better society than you can imagine.
There is a reason the Social Justice crowd are among the most hate-filled, resentful, and bigoted members of the United States. Their ideology is untenable and their vision too short-sighted.
