The education divide alluded to repeatedly here is a core focus of my new book with @ProfSobolewska "Brexitland", which will be out in the autumn. The education divide on the left and the tensions it produces are indeed central, but this is also not a new development
@ProfSobolewska The big change is in the relative size of the groups - graduates are expanding very rapidly as an electorate and with growing heft comes growing power. A process exacerbated by the heavy over-representation of graduates in party membership and elites
@ProfSobolewska This graph illustrates the scale of the shift. When Blair first won power, those with no formal qualifications at all outnumbered grads 2:1. By 2015, grads outnumber those with no quals. They have gained further since.
@ProfSobolewska University graduates were also liberal, and vocal about it, on identity conflict issues like immigration in earlier Labour administrations. But sheer weight of numbers ensured the party had to take seriously the views of non-grads. Now, for first time, graduates have the numbers.
