#BlueNoMatterWho must be more than a slogan. Democrats & all Americans need to recognize the stakes in November. Trump is an existential threat to our democracy, as great as any we have faced. He is a threat to our justice system. He is a threat to our international standing.
A Trump victory in 2020 with the GOP holding the Senate and perhaps winning the House would result in a generation of political, extremist judges, gutting our system of checks and balances, undercutting the rule of law, attacking the weakest among us, strengthening our enemies.
Champion your candidates. But when the dust settles, support the Democratic candidate no matter who it is, work for them, raise money for them, canvas for them, go door to door for them, drive voters to work for them, fight voter suppression for them.
This is no ordinary election. Washington is not the remote abstraction far from our lives it sometimes seems. The things we have taken for granted about America, what sets us apart, what makes us great, are all at risk.
That means that fostering division, succumbing to the language of conflict, sitting the race out because you don't like the choices other voters have made, are all playing into the hands of Trump, McConnell, Barr & ultimately Putin and those who wish to see America on its knees.
It also means that the language of "there is only one way to win" or "only my candidate can win" or "here's the one and only formula for electability" is profoundly dangerous. There are many paths to victory but all involve a commitment to unity and a realization of the stakes.
Take a moment. Reflect. Adjust to reality. Work hard for what is possible for your candidates or viewpoints. But stop right now with the language of division, the words and attitudes that will make healing, unity and mobilization harder when they are essential in the Fall.
Respect the process. Respect other Democrats. Offer constructive advice to opponents. Compete vigorously until the party makes it choice. But realize that there is no Democrat currently running who would not be a million times better as president than Trump.
There is no Democratic agenda regardless of who is in the WH that would not repair much of the damage done by Trump, fight inequality, combat the climate crisis, fix our immigration system, create more opportunity, ensure all better healthcare and a more dignified retirement.
In other words: unity, unity, unity, unity. Democratic Party unity is the one thing that stands between us and the death of our democracy and an America brought to its knees by Trump-GOP corruption, valuelessness, lawlessness and service to foreign enemies.
Unity. Unity. Unity. It is your patriotic duty. It is our shared imperative. Anything that undercuts it puts our future, your children's future, your grandchildren's future at risk. It is easy to lose sight of this essential fact. We mustn't.
Whether we do or not will define our generation's legacy.
