Very interesting article from @WIRED - On How Silicon Valley Ruined Work Culture.

wired.com/story/how-sili…

Time for a thread!
"Then companies like Google came along and reinvented the rat race into something with purpose and, along the way, confused work with the rest of life."

A case of a few steps forward, and a few steps back.
This has spread beyond the valley, and beyond tech, even into more traditional industries.

Is this a bad thing? Yes and no.

All organizations can benefit from more outside-the-box thinking that FAANG organizations are known for.
And yet we're starting to see more organizations and industries move all to Slack, open-space offices, always expected to answer emails at any time etc.

This is a MAJOR step back.
Now we're ending up with these organizations full of people next to each other, headphones in all on Slack, expected to stay late and "hustle" and "bring their true selves" and whatever cringey new-age language people use to get people to work more.
It's great to see people like @realdanlyons and @dhh push back on this kind of thing, and I think it's something I need to be more upfront of with my offerings at Playficient.
I do think there's a way to create more playful and fun offices to help organizations think outside-the-box that goes beyond Ping-pong tables and bean bag chairs (which I've written about here)

This is a conversation that I need to be more vocal about, and it's always great to see organizations that thrive well without falling to the trappings of the FAANG effect.

(another blog I've written about)

So let's keep the topic alive on how not every fucking organization needs to run like a Silicon Valley startup.
