/ THREAD: Body Language Analysis No. 4027-T: Donald Trump Mispronounces his own name — with a Secondary Shoulder Tic (VIDEO, PHOTOS) • #BodyLanguageExpert #BodyLanguage #DonaldTrump #Nonverbal #EmotionalIntelligence #CoronaVirus #ShoulderTic
/ During the 0:15 - 0:16 of this video, Donald Trump stutters, mispronouncing his own last name. A split second afterward, he quickly retracts his right shoulder.
/ He then gestures with both arms moderately widespread, with his palms forward. Simultaneously, his central forehead contracts upward along with a reactionary (psychological protective) blink.
/ This shoulder movement is a tic-like behavior. It's a nonverbal tell indicating that Trump is aware of his verbal mistake.
/ Pure Tics are 'unvoluntary' movements (not involuntary movements). People are temporarily able to suppress their tics. However, the tic-suppression results in a physical-psychological discomfort that crescendos until it is relieved by 'performing' the tic.
/ Trump's tic-like behavior is becoming more common as his mispronunciations are also growing more frequent.
/ Thus, Trump's tics are probably related to his psychological stress and sleep deprivation — although it's possible that some drugs/medications may be a contributing etiology.
/ Other causes of classic tics include Huntington's disease (highly doubtful in Trump's scenario), stroke, head trauma, infections, poisons, and (intriguingly) Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease.
/ Trump's face often contorts (note the elevated central forehead and reactionary-protective blink) and he spreads his hands/arms immediately after these mispronunciation-tics.
/ Trump's movements are an 'edge of consciousness'-conscious method of distraction. This behavior is similar to a person coughing and shifting in their chair after audible flatulence.
/ SUMMARY: Trump's sudden shoulder movements are a tic-like behavior. They're a nonverbal reaction to his mispronunciations/verbal gaffes which are becoming more frequent. It's possible that these tic-like behaviors are superimposed/coexistent w/ other movement disorders.
