Hmmm ... GDPR, I started off thinking that EC was leading the world in this field ... one day later, I discover it's barely emulated elsewhere, it basically rifts off South Korea and it's more about harmonisation of previous legislation which in some cases it has weakened ...
... a lot of the pieces I've read seem more about cheerleading, a wishful desire for GDPR to be seen as a global success rather than critical examination. Am I missing something?
Reason why I am asking is the EC seems to have a poor record on trying to create standards with establishing markets (something you shouldn't do) - network / search / cloud etc. But data / privacy was already a well established field - I would have thought this was a slam dunk.
Let me refine that ... you shouldn't try to impose standards on a field in transition (e.g. product to utility or custom to produuct) where practices haven't emerged and markets are establishing unless you have a very dominant position.
Why I'm asking is the EC AI efforts seems like a no hoper (as per network/search/cloud) because the EU has no dominant position and the GDPR counter example is about harmonisation of a pre-existing market (not emerging) and on examination doesn't seem to live up to the hype.
So if anyone knows of any rigorous examination of the global impact of GDPR ... I'd be interested to read it.
Oh, and background ... what I'm trying to work out is whether I should divert any attention to the EC AI proposals or keep a much closer focus on China instead.
