Let me tell y’all my thoughts around #ElizabethWarren suspending her campaign. Sit back and relax because this might take a while.
I am heartbroken that yet again, misogyny wins. I’d love to have a world my daughter can grow up in where women really can do anything.
I grew up thinking all I could be when I grew up was a wife and mom and nothing else. I wasn’t expected to go to college by my family. While being a wife and mom are good, they are not necessary. I want my daughter to know she can do other things too.
The woman that had a huge impact on me going to college was my choir director, Dr. Louise Frakes. She realized my potential when I didn’t know I had any. I saw a woman who had a family and career and accomplished extraordinary things and changed lives.
I still remember sitting in my room filling out my FAFSA on my own, determined to go to college. I filled that thing out on my own at the age of 17. Neither of my parents went to college.
I dream a world where little girls can see that they really can do anything. But until we see this representation happen at every level (not just women, but all marginalized groups), it’s pretty hard. My own daughter told me 2 months ago that she wants a woman to be president.
Our daughter even asked @CodeSipCoffee if he would vote for her if she ever ran for office. She can see the ceiling. And I hope we see a day when that ceiling truly doesn’t exist.
I hope all the youth I work with every day know that they too can do things they are shown and told by our society that they can’t accomplish. And I promise to do everything I can to help realize their potential.
