I think we’ve reached the point where we can say it is a statistical impossibility that Turkey does not have a single case of coronavirus.

We’ve all been privately talking/joking about it but it’s probably time to really discuss what is happening here.
Early detection and treatment is vital when you’re dealing with any illness.

Public precautionary measures are even more vital in cases of epidemics. Whatever is happening in Turkey right now needs to be reconsidered fast. This can’t end well if the current approach continues.
If this is the reason (and I apologize but I sense it’s the only way to phrase this), it is a terrible fucking approach. It will backfire big time.

If you try to save the day by sacrificing trust and all the days of the future, you’re acting malevolently.
Just looked at that map again. It looks like a no-fly zone over a war-torn country.

The problem is viruses aren’t planes. Seriously, this isn’t normal.

Turkey is suffering today and anger is naturally a part of grief. Yet the overriding message from those representing power is that now is no time for criticism - it is time to unite.

The problem is that we have been divided, quite purposefully by those in power, for decades.
This is a salutary lesson for all leaders around the world (the US and UK are prime examples) who seek to use division to create loyal bases and otherise all opposition.

When things are going well, you push away opponents but you can’t expect them to come back on bad days.
The opposition in Turkey have been called traitors, terrorists, Luddites, backwards, idiots, honourless, basically every word under the sun.

They have been persecuted, jailed, silenced, pushed out of decision-making and had their rationale demeaned as nonsense.

AKP-affiliated social media is heartily laughing at a video which mocks, demeans and belittles a woman who appeared in an earlier report from the BBC about Turkey’s economic downturn.

This is real “let them eat cake” territory - is the claim that there is no poverty in Turkey?
Ostensibly, they make fun of this woman, a domestic cleaner, because there are photos on her social media where she went to a party, once, which was presumably on a rented boat. That’s it.

One assumes for the AKP, if you’re poor, you should never have fun or leave your home.
The mocking video itself is filmed from the banks of the Bosphorus, a place where most of the properties are multi-million dollar mansions called “yalıs”. It is just remarkably tone deaf at a time when poverty escalated due to increased cost of living and rampant unemployment.

A standard tourist visa to the UK is £95. We once paid £361 for a 2 year visa for my wife and the UK gave her a six month visa and kept all the money anyway.

And Turks have to pay to actually leave their own country.

So Tim, mate, this is super #firstworldproblems
Oh yeah and when Turks apply for a visa to the UK (or anywhere), they have to fill in 20 pages of forms which seem to dig into family history, finances, job prospects, every aspect of their private lives.

You just have to pay on arrival and you’re done. $35 is a steal.
By the way, when Turks apply for visas (which they have to for almost every Western country) one of the questions is invariably something like:

“Have you ever had trouble with the police over terrorism, WMDs or speeding?”

If you’ve ever done 133km/ph, you’re royally fucked.

Death is the most emotional subject we as humans must deal with. And we all must deal with it. But there is no truly rational way to deal with death. There are ways one could argue make life while living more enjoyable, but rationality is out of the question.
So, one of the primary ways we as humans deal with death is to create a heuristic about death. We think of deaths as normal or tragic. A 95-year-old passing away in their sleep surrounded by loved ones? We have a “celebration of life” rather than a grim funeral.

@TomColeOK04 Immediately before, @RepMcGovern explained that all witnesses were chosen on a bipartisan basis and the briefing for the committee members was conducted by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. The issue is nonpartisan and the solutions should be nonpartisan as well.

Back on January 21st, the first patient in the United States was announced to have the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. That person was diagnosed and treated in Washington State. The patient was in the hospital for two weeks and has subsequently recovered. #coronavirus
When researchers compared the genome of that first coronavirus infection to a more recently diagnosed (Feb 28) coronavirus patient,who also lives in the same county but is not known to have had contact with the first patient, they found the two genomes were similar.

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.

But even a minor adjustment of a few days in the mortality rate paints an entirely different picture
