.@AliVelshi played a clip of Margaret Chase Smith being greeted with laughter as she ran for the Republican nomination in 1964. That was FOUR YEARS after the SRI LANKAN parliament elected Sirimavo Bandaranaike as prime minister & the 1st female elected head of govt in the world.
For whatever reason the U.S. has been uniquely resistant to giving women political power, as governors, Senators, heads of congress (@SpeakerPelosi stands alone) and president, compared to other world powers and Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other religious-majority countries.
Not sure what that's about. Could be a vestige of the country's Puritan roots, or cultural, or coincidental... hard to say. money.com/female-heads-o…

This push would have been more helpful to the campaign pre-South Carolina, no? Or at least before Super Tuesday. Still, it's a must-do for anyone seeking the Democratic nomination, so it's something they absolutely should scale up.
This gets to the fundamental challenge of running against "the establishment." As @michaelharriot has eloquently written, for many black voters, esp in Republican-run states, their only power flows through their civil rights orgs and black Democratic reps, ie "the establishment."
And these quotes by @MsLaToshaBrown get to a second point: Sanders' movement, unlike Jesse Jackson's 1984 and 1988 campaigns (which were similar platform-wise), has struggled to center racial justice as strongly as class justice. That makes his end-goal harder ie black voters.

It's why picking a president is about more than whether you "like" or don't like a candidate you will likely never meet or spend time with. It's about hiring someone to manage the entire federal executive branch. Trump's temperament & business history were a CLEAR foretelling.
I have met countless people who have told me they voted for Jill Stein or didn't vote at all because there was "just something about Hillary Clinton they didn't like." Yet the question: which one -- Clinton or Trump -- would have better managed this crisis answers itself.
Gendered weirdness, which is a thing in our electorate (just ask Liz Warren, Kamala Harris etc) aside, American voters are now experiencing the dire consequences of "rolling the dice to shake things up," or prioritizing negative feelings about demographic change over competency.

There's a lot that's parallel about then and now. Sanders' platform is similar to Rev. Jackson's back then, while Biden is winning a lot of the states Jackson won in '84 and especially 1988 when he did so well they had to bargain with him at the convention a la DNC post-2016.
In 1988 Jackson won the primaries in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Virginia and D.C and the caucuses in (ironically) Delaware, Michigan, South Carolina and Vermont. He won 11 contests total and nearly 7 million votes. (In '84 he won LA, SC, DC, VA & MS).
Because he had so many delegates but the Dems didn't want to put him on the ticket, they instead offered to give future primary contests proportional instead of winner-take-all, which ultimately is what allowed Barack Obama to grab a delegate lead in 2008 and hold it vs Hillary.

The GOP organized in the 1850s. White northern man had long worried that rich southern slaveholders were taking over the government. In 1854, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act opening the West, which had been free under the Missouri Compromise, to slavery. /2
They would create new slave states, overpowering free states. Soon rich men would own Congress. Poor white men would become serfs. The day after the K-N Act passed, N Reps from all parties joined to stand against the Slave Power, and ordinary men protested the new law. /3

Attack on police HQ in Chabahar in Sistan&Baluchestan in #Iran.Sources say gunfire erupted between authorities&armed attackers.
Commander of this HQ, 2 members of security forces, 2 members of their families've been killed& 20 members of security forces' families've been injured.
According to sources five more members of Iranian security forces have been injured in the attack. Sources add that this base was responsible for killing Balouchi youth for no reason and it was working hand in hand with the IRGC in suppressing Balouchi people.
Iranian media claim Ansar Al-Furqan is behind the attack. Ansar Al-Furqan is an insurgent group established in 2013. This group was initially created and armed by the IRGC to fight Balouchi movement but four years later a significant part of the group rejected working with Iran.
