Thanks to the many folks who sent this (from @aahks) to me. I know people don't always make time for videos. The quotes here are striking, so I'm transcribing them in this thread. These are all things actually said to women surgeons recently.

I would love to add my own reactions, but the thread would be too long. So the quotes will stand for themselves.

"Well, aren't you a tasty little package?"

"I didn't know they let girls into orthopedics."

"Training a woman is such a waste because women are only half as productive as men."

"You're not married? Good. Maybe you won't get pregnant and leave."

"This ride in my bed into the operating room would be a lot more fun if you were sitting on my lap for it, sweetheart."

"Did you have to go to nursing school before they let you go to medical school?"

"Listen, I have daughters and am very supportive of women, but I seriously can't believe they let you guys operate."

"What kind of birth control are you on?"

"You should get an IUD. You're not allowed to get pregnant during residency."

"She's pleasant and tries hard, but she's not cut out for real orthopedics."

"She would do well in something like hand or pediatrics."

"That's how I like my ladies when they're doing my dressings: on their knees."

"What advice do I have for you? Two words: birth control."

"Do they let you help out with the surgery sometimes?"

"How come a pretty little thing like you wants to play with the big boys?"

"So which doctor do you work with?"

"So now that you're off maternity leave, I suppose you're going to want to scrub out to go, you know, make baby food with your boobs."

"You shouldn't be here. You took a spot from a man who needs to support his family."

"Why don't you try to smile more and wear more skirts and dresses?"

"I'm not covering your call if you have a baby."

"Get me a real resident."

"Our contracts weren't written with women in mind."

The video ends with this call to action for men in surgery:

"We are your colleagues. We are your coauthors. We are your students and your teachers. We are not against you, but we need you as our advocates. Discourage harassment, and stand up for us."

Please share widely--there are still too many people who don't realize what women surgeons face daily. Let's stop accepting this reality.
