It’s Monday and I’m in Sao Paulo again and back full-time on #covid19. But first, because we all need some non-virus content sometimes to stay sane (and unlike @JeremyKonyndyk, I don’t bake): Here is a what I did this weekend.
I went into the Atlantic Forest in Brazil with researchers studying bioluminescence. It’s a stunning place, with an incredible amount of biodiversity, hundreds of new species still being discovered. For obvious reasons we went at night
I had not realized how hard it is to actually spot bioluminescent mushrooms, especially when there is some moonlight to distract you. But I eventually found this mushroom: Mycena asterina (thanks Henrique Domingos for taking the pictures).
The researchers have discovered several other species of bioluminescent mushrooms here in the last years. And like so much of the research, that the world is building on now in its response to #covid19, they were driven by one simple thing: curiosity.
So that was my weekend: A welcome reminder of both, the awesome beauty of nature and the power of curiosity. And one day, when this epidemic is over, I will write that story. (And maybe even spend a weekend not working.)
Oh, and maybe some botanist can tell me what species this plant is. The fruit intrigued me (given my obsession with #blue)
