USA meanwhile is near the bottom in this list, between Turkey & Vietnam:
Oh, jeez, the 8,500 figure for the USA is actually the number of *samples* tested, too. The number of *people* tested is even lower, according to the NYT: nytimes.com/2020/03/10/us/…

"Don't touch your face" is stupid advice, just like "don't open suspicious attachments" or "don't click on suspicious links in emails". Email is designed to have attachments and links, asking people to not use the product as designed is nonsense.
This video went viral (sic) of a health official advising people to not touch their face as she, and the people behind her, touch their faces. People are going to click on email links and touch their faces.

This makes several useful points about cohort. Are we comparing apples with apples? Are the cohort selection criteria the same from state to state and country to country.

The answer is clearly NO regarding country to country.

Something is going badly wrong in USA
In the U.K. the Dept of Health are correctly imposing a nationally coherent strategy with common surveillance software.

As is evident from the embedded thread, in the USA they cannot say with any certainty how many people have been tested in each state and county.
So who knows what meaning to attach to positive tests?

Firstly. Why would the CDC or states or counties seek to conceal the number of tests being carried out?

I can’t think of a good scientific reason.

Political ones maybe..but not good for citizens.

During the 1918 flu pandemic, NYC health authorities moved slowly to combat the disease at first. They thought it would peak quickly and go away. But when it didn’t, NYC health officials came up with an unusual plan - and it worked (1)

NYC emerged from 3 waves of the 1918 pandemic with a far lower fatality rate than neighboring big cities. NYC had a death rate of 4.7 per 1000. Boston had 6.5. Philly had 7.3.

NYC mitigated a pandemic through public health measures once and can do it again (2)
Royal S. Copeland was brand new on the job as NYC Health Commissioner in 1918 (today, that’s Oxiris Barbot @NYCHealthCommr). He was an ophthalmologist who decided to handle the crisis differently from every other city in the US. His creativity saved lives. (3)

Also believed she walked Los Angeles Koreatown prior to return flight to Seoul.
