I was looking at the WHO’s annual global tuberculosis report (which is full of amazing data) and came across this interesting map
Obviously it’s a simplification and the raw data is more informative, but as shitty as our health care system is or is made out to be, a great majority of citizens of other nations are in far more precarious financial situations with their major health care costs
Also think it’s interesting that Scandinavia (ie Bernie’s Denmark) is in the same category as is regarding catastrophic costs, and much of Europe (eastern mostly) is WORSE
The WHO has another site related to health care costs in general. CHOCK full of data. I messed around a little bit with it today. I can’t pull it up at the moment - but we’re towards the top as far as government spending per capita as a % of GDP
What that means, if you don’t like our health care system, as we do to varying degrees, is that the problem isn’t the amount of government dollars being thrown at it.
Instead the problem - as most of them are - is need of STRUCTURAL reform. That’s harder than just promising free shit, which is why no one talks about or has tried to solve it in a zero-sum purely regulatory reform framework
College loan reform is in the same vein - just writing a blank check doesn’t fix the underlying problems. No one wants to tackle those. It’s easier to say you’ll just back up the dump truck full of money that isn’t really there in the first place
I’m in favor of reform - but more of Teddy’s trust-busting nature of reform. Monopolies and unspoken industry agreements are real and need to be fought against. But simply saying you’ll tax the rich and corporations and spend it on all these promises - it’s just not there
