Since Hurricane Sandy there has been a building GOP narrative that disaster aid requests are a stealth Democratic welfare state operation. They will continue to slow walk and underfund the Coronavirus response.
Here are the Senators against Sandy relief, including Mitch McConnell. senate.gov/legislative/LI…
And here are the House members who voted against Sandy relief. govtrack.us/congress/votes…
And Hurricane Maria relief? Took 2 years. nytimes.com/2019/06/03/us/…
And the leader of the GOP with his never-ending harangue against relief for the 2018 wildfires in California.
Pro Publica did great reporting on the truly shameless chicanery of Reps who voted for Katrina relief in 2005 then against Sandy relief. propublica.org/article/the-58…
Katrina relief was fast and bipartisan as was September 11 relief. I think what's clear is that the GOP of 2020 is different from the GOP of 2005. And the party now sees disaster relief as yet another venue for partisan point scoring.
I expect Coronavirus will be the same. I'll predict there will be GOP Reps who MAY THEMSELVES get Coronavirus and will vote against relief and vote against CDC budget increases. It's a variant of climate denial. Sorry I didn't expect to write a thread and so I didn't number this!
The media has tried and tried to frame this as a "double standard" story or a "voting against their constituents' interests" story but that misses the mark. This is a "reflecting their ideology truthfully" story. The GOP believe disaster relief is a loser. @onthemedia
