1) We are in the process of converting some of our establishments into temporary food markets. Breads, ready to eat foods, meals prepared for multiple people. I have seen a complete shift in the food world (where people get their meals) since opening original Sahm’s in 1986.
2) In the early 90’s in Fishers, there was one Kroger location, 2 Marsh locations, a giant Cub Foods, and Archer’s grocery within a 3 mile radius of 116th and Allisonville. There was a population of about 12,000 people. There were about 15-20 restaurants.
3) Now? There is one Kroger location, one Gordon’s location, and one Costco. There are over 100 restaurants. There are over 60,000 people in that radius. Restaurants went from serving 30% of people’s meals in the early 90’s to well over 70% today.
4) People need to eat. There are not enough grocery stores to feed everyone. We are preparing some of our locations to be places where people can go and get bulk meals, breads, salads, dressings, and other items. We will be selling these items as close to cost as possible.
5) We serve over a million meals a year to Central Indiana residents. We can make this switch happen. We will keep as many of our employees as we can through this, albeit with painful but necessary pay reductions. We understand the need to put business aside and help people.
6) We are trying to work with local officials and other restaurants and food services to keep people fed. The 2 immediate needs/stressors will be medical staff support and food support. We are working hard to be a part of that food support network. Stay safe. Stay tuned. Peace.
