Last night I asked Tower Hamlets Council to pulp the latest edition of 'Our East End' newspaper
Dated March 2020 but it does not mention the words: flu, virus, coronavirus, Covid-19 anywhere, no health advice in it
I asked to re-issue with latest advice

NHS advice about coronavirus dates from at least before 13th February, I tweeted about it on that date
Our East End contains stories from after 19th February
Tower Hamlets Council since 2013 has been responsible for Public Health in the Borough
It has large public health team

So why did they not put in anything about the virus?
But Our East End only names Mayor Biggs 18 times, the least mentions in last 8 editions, progress!
And I am in the ironic situation of having called for it to be shut down now asking for a special Covid edition

Another example of poor comms 6 days after WHO announce global pandemic
I mentioned last night as well
As at 11.30am Tuesday the 1st thing you see on the Council website is about Council tax
2nd thing is about anti-idling campaign
3rd thing NHS advice on coronavirus?????????

Here is link to the Public Health section of Council website and screenshot just to prove that they do have Public Health responsibilities
No mention yet of pandemic

Tomorrow night there is a full Council meeting, with the exception of one question no mention of Covid-19 or the Councils response to it
So @going4golds & I submitted this draft emergency motion so that we can properly discuss the issues & the response plan tomorrow in public

It is a draft feel free to let us know if there should be any changes, deadline tomorrow PM
We have shared it with the Council & other political groups in advance so that they have time to respond with their own thoughts
The meeting will be televised

But @going4golds and I think the Council needs to be more pro-active especially on its comms plan, for example sharing the NHS video on how to properly wash your hands as some people do not know how to do that

In the last 6 month, I have attended 36 Council meetings, average 6 a month - average time 2-3 hours each one + reading & preparation in advance = 4 to 5 hours per meeting, some more like budget, some less
Plus this week did 1/2 day session on Pension issues
Some Cllrs do less

Although some Cllrs do at least arrive fully prepared at meetings & have raised far more members enquiries then I have, some have not read papers & do not say anything in meetings
Tower Hamlets is too dependent on a small group of hard working Councillors (across 3 parties)

Have a look at how often they hold advice surgeries as well

I do 3 a month approximately, every Saturday 1-2pm at Cubitt Town Library, @going4golds & I there in rotation (although I need to reschedule my 1st Thursday of the month session at Idea store)

Last Labour budget by Chancellor Alistair Darling in March 2010 he said "Even so, it is clear that the next spending settlement from 2011 onwards will be very tough – the toughest for decades"
Tonight Labour in TH seem to have forgotten this speech

Yes, there is an argument that austerity went on for too long & cut too much
But Alistair Darling indicated change had to happen
TH has been less effected then others thanks to population growth, business rates, New Homes Bonus
Question is how to respond to austerity?

Some Councils have had to cut deeply, some have been very creative with limited resources
But as this chart shows overall TH core spending power is up by 8% since 2015/16 (not including business rates)
But also how shape of budget changes, government funding⬇️but C tax⬆️

The correct framing on #coronavirus #COVIDー19 risks, and why the death rate of the virus is irrelevant:
Death is the most emotional subject we as humans must deal with. And we all must deal with it. But there is no truly rational way to deal with death. There are ways one could argue make life while living more enjoyable, but rationality is out of the question.
So, one of the primary ways we as humans deal with death is to create a heuristic about death. We think of deaths as normal or tragic. A 95-year-old passing away in their sleep surrounded by loved ones? We have a “celebration of life” rather than a grim funeral.

In 2003, the world experienced an outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). I was in med school. Initially, the illness seemed to be linked with travel to China, but the Chinese government was not saying anything about it.
The cause of SARS was completely unknown, and it was five months between the illness first appearing and the World Health Organization (WHO) becoming significantly involved, alerting public health authorities around the world.

I’m currently studying on a cruise ship with @SemesterAtSea for the semester abroad, sailing to Asia, Africa, and Europe. Here’s how #coronavirus (#COVIDー19) is impacting the students and faculty on board:
Our original itinerary started in Ensenada, Mexico, and was scheduled to port in Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco, and The Netherlands. On Jan. 24, our first day in Japan, we were informed our stop in China had been cancelled
The Institute for Shipboard Education informed us we would be bypassing China completely due to concerns of future ports barring us from entry. This was a fairly big blow to the shipboard community. We continued on to Vietnam, where we stayed for an extra six days.
