1/50 #Science is an ongoing process that serves to investigate phenomena, gain new insights or "correct prior knowledge" and this only works in #discourse. This includes diversity of #Opinion, #tolerance and a broad debate space. This is a large thread.
2/50 "#trust the science" is in my view the most #antiscience statement ever. #Questioning science is how you do #Science. This thread gives some examples and further questions.…
3/50 What about good ##scientific #Practice? I found a glaring example here (of all things, in what I consider to be a rush to #vaccine #approval). #blotgate…

Is #LiquidBiopsy the Future of #Cancer #Diagnostics? 💉🧬🤔

Standard cancer detection tests are done with #tissuebiopsies.🧫

These are invasive, risky, and expensive as they require an endoscope and open surgery.

An alternative approach to this is Liquid Biopsy which is performed by drawing blood.🩸

Liquid biopsy is an innovative solution to #cancerdetection.

▪️They use a much smaller sample and have a quicker turnaround for results compared to tissue biopsies.

▪️They are more advantageous in detecting a metastasized tumor - when cancer has spread to multiple sites.

#Genomics is a rapidly growing field of #science that has revolutionized the way we understand #biology.
It has #applications in diverse fields. From #healthcare and #biotechnology to #climatechange, genomics is leading to some of the most exciting and world-changing discoveries in science and #medicine like:
1. Predicting Disease Risk:📊

Genomics can detect diseases long before symptoms present themselves. Early #diagnosis of a disease can significantly increase the chances of successful treatments like #cancer, #diabetes, #autism, etc.

1/16 THREAD🧵3 years ago I proposed that #Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) is a #ParadigmShift in psychiatry. The paper has been viewed almost 80k times around the globe and sits at the top 1% views/downloads and top 8% citations of the whole @FrontiersIn journal series.
2/16 Published in the special issue “Psychedelic Drug Research in the 21st Century” it has 82 citations at Google Scholar and was included in one slide by Javier Muñiz, from the FDA’s division of psychiatry, at his ISRP lecture in Oct/2019…
3/16 My perspective on the psychedelic impact on psychiatric research and development was based on Prof. @rose_nikolas useful critique of the current situation in psychiatry as a triple crisis…

"#AstraZeneca, we have a problem"

New #preprint from Lena Krutzke and Stefan Kochanek et. al. @uni_ulm and @UniklinikUlm on @researchsquare

"Process-related impurities in the ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccine"

Why is this a problem? A short thread (1/8) 👇…
"The intramuscular injection of proteins that are not part of the active principle of the #vaccine itself might have effects at different levels"

That`s why removal of impurities (e.g. host-cell proteins) is critical for #therapeutics and strictly regulated
Unfortunately, removal of process-related #impurities from viral vector-based #therapeutics (e.g. host-cell proteins) is imperfect and low levels - orders of magnitude lower than the actual active therapeutic - are usually accepted if they are classified as non-problematic

Time to share some thoughts and questions following the .@medrxivpreprint first release of results from the #SolidarityTrial that compared local standard care to #remdesivir, #HydroxyChloroquine #lopinavir_ritonavir and #interferon for treatment of patients with #COVID19
I have read the #solidarityTrial preprint:…

Its supplementary…

its posted protocol:…

The CRF:…

The final report from #ACTT1 for contrast:…
Everyone has focused on the results, which is understandable, yet understanding the specifics in #SolidarityTrial design compared to the #ACTT1 design, may bring light into the differences reported between trials and may give a way to do better in #COVID19 #therapeutics

As the #COVID19 #outbreak evolves, comparisons have been made with #influenza. Both cause respiratory disease but there are important differences between #SARSCoV2 #virus causing COVID-19 & the influenza virus causing the #flu [from WHO COVID situation report 06.03.2020] #scicomm
Similarity #1. Both #COVID19 & the #flu have a similar disease presentation. Both cause respiratory disease, which presents as a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and even death.
Similarity #2. Both #SARSCoV2 & #influenza viruses are transmitted by contact, droplets & fomites so same #publichealth measures (hand hygiene, good respiratory etiquette (coughing into elbow / into a tissue, immediately disposing of the tissue) are important to prevent infection

Incredibly important hypothesis piece published today 👉 “Proposed here is a theory that #microorganisms from within the #brain and elsewhere in the body contribute to the long-term #neurological deterioration characteristic of traumatic brain injury”:…
From paper 👉 1. “First, since the normal human #brain is not sterile, but is host to a variety of microorganisms, blows to the #skull may dislodge them from their accustomed local environments, in which they have been living in quiet equilibrium with neighboring #brain cells”
2. “2nd, upon impact commensal #microbes already resident on surfaces of the nose, mouth + eyes, and potentially harmful organisms from the environment, may gain access to the #brain through the distal ends of the olfactory + optic #nerves or even a disrupted blood-brain barrier”
