My non-Twitter alter ego is as a Paramedic for my town FD. I am on the front lines so to speak. So, I obviously study things that I may encounter, and was reviewing Coronavirus on the CDC website to prepare. I found this tidbit that should be shared.
“Risk factors for severe illness are not yet clear, although older patients and those with chronic medical conditions may be at higher risk for severe illness. Among more than 44,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in China as of Feb 11, 2020, most occurred among patients aged
30–69 years (77.8%), and approximately 19% were severely or critically ill [9]. Case-fatality proportion among cases aged ≥60 years was: 60-69 years: 3.6%; 70-79 years: 8%; ≥80 years: 14.8%. Patients who reported no underlying medical conditions had an overall case fatality of
0.9%, but case fatality was higher for patients with comorbidities: 10.5% for those with cardiovascular disease, 7% for diabetes, and 6% each for chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, and cancer. Case fatality for patients who developed respiratory failure, septic shock, or
multiple organ dysfunction was 49%.“ So, what caught my eye was that of the confirmed cases “most occurred among patients aged 30–69 years (77.8%), and approximately 19% were severely or critically ill [9]” So, 30-69 year olds are seemingly the most susceptible, with 19% becoming
“severely or critically ill” That is a massive portion of our population. Not just “old people” is it? Don’t become severely or critically ill. Please, prepare and start #SocialDistancingNow before we completely lose this thing. Nothing can stop what’s coming, but we can mitigate
the spread, and hopefully limit the loss of human life. We are all in this together, black, white, left, right, gay, straight, rich and poor and literally everyone else I missed. This bug has zero prejudice. Just needs a body. Thanks for reading, share and be safe.
