As we transition past the early stages of coronavirus response and toward long-term solutions, we're going to need to examine the application of South Korean wide-scale testing, wearing masks, and social distancing. We can't all stay home from work indefinitely, obviously.
The measures we are taking right now do not "solve" the coronavirus problem. They buy us time to ensure widespread testing capacity, to create the ICU beds and ventilators necessary, and to assure that as coronavirus spreads across the population, we minimize its effects.
We are watching second-wave infections in a variety of countries. This thing won't disappear in any real way until there is herd immunity. The only thing we're doing right now is allowing that immunity to develop gradually rather than all at once so we don't overwhelm the system.
