What to do about coronavirus, a thread.

Since the government is doing all the wrong things, here's a thread of all the things we should be doing to combat this epidemic.

1) Get good sleep, eat healthy food, and go for walks outside. All of these things help your immune system.
2) Educate yourself about what the virus is, how it spreads, and ways that you can avoid exposure and exposing others.

Dr. Osterholm from @CIDRAP explains quite a bit in this @joerogan interview.

3) Understand that the virus will be present in the human population for years.

Some of the changes to how we interact will permanently change our economy and way of life.

Government bailouts can't stop these changes and are a waste of taxpayer money.

No buggy whip bailouts.
4) Remove sanctions on other countries that interfere with their ability to import medical supplies or exports goods.

The virus infects and kills humans regardless of country, color, or creed.

Denying countries access to medical supplies is cruel and wastes valuable resources.
5) Eliminate all barriers and regulations that prevent massive testing.

The @US_FDA and @CDCgov have actively tried to stop testing earlier in this crisis.

We can't go back, but any lab that has the equipment should be allowed to test.

Any tests that can be imported should be.
6) Ignore any laws that prevent people from saving lives.

Dr. Helen Chu is the hero of this crisis, testing people after the FDA ordered her to stop.

If there are open source ventilator plans, people can build ventilators, regardless of Federal medical device regulations.
7) Help each other.

We can't count on government in a crisis, but we can count on people.

Run errands for people who can't go out.

Care for children of health care workers.

Be kind, thoughtful, and focus on what you can do to make a difference for your fellow humans.
8) Don't spread bullshit.

Facts are your friends in a pandemic. Misinformation is dangerous.

If you see friends spreading rumors or calling this disease a hoax, let them know there are some Italians who would like to have a word.

9) If you are a President who made things worse by spreading misinformation, stop talking.

Nobody trusts you anymore, but they do trust people like Dr. Fauci.

Let the competent experts do all of the talking, make sure they have the resources they need, and stay out of the way.
10) If you are a journalist, choose stories wisely.

Cover what is happening, what people can do to help, and experts who provide valuable information people can use to make good decisions for themselves and others.

Don't cover people spreading bullshit, e.g. the President.
11) Don't restrict movement with curfews.

Curfews may make sense if there are riots or violent criminals running around.

They are counterproductive with a virus, since they force people to all come out at the same time, increasing crowding and the spread of the infection.
12) Don't close the borders.

There are nearly 10K cases in the United States & community spread.

The virus is here.

Travel restrictions and border shutdowns force thousands of people into crowded airports and cause panic, increasing spread of the infection.

See, e.g. O'Hare Image
13) Don't restrict purchases.

If people feel the government will stop them from buying things, they buy more of those things.

This applies to guns, alcohol, cannabis, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, masks, and anything else.

Allow prices to float, the market will find its level.
14) Remove barriers to trade.

Suspend all tariffs & the Jones Act for the duration of the national emergency.

We need supplies in a crisis.

Any law that prevents people from getting them from where they are produced to where they are needed must stop.

Free trade saves lives.
15) Don't let government control industry.

Government is slow to marshal the resources they already have.

Using the Defense Production Act to put the President in charge of companies is the stupidest thing the government could do right now.

He's only competent at bankruptcy.
16) Prepare for this crisis, not a different crisis.

You can't shoot a virus, there's no use in stockpiling guns.

The water supply is unlikely to be disrupted, there's no use in stockpiling bottled water.

You don't poop more, there's no use in stockpiling toilet paper.
17) Don't impose “shelter in place” orders

The virus doesn't roam the streets or jump from people maintaining physical separation.

Government lockdown orders encourage panic buying and crowding to get to stores, increasing spread of the infection.

Opposite of good policy.
18) Test everyone as soon as possible.

Random sample testing of asymptomatic people gives a clearer picture of community spread.

Big numbers look scary, but not knowing the extent of infection prevents people from making good choices.

Information is power and keeps us safe.
