As a mom of a special needs daughter with a medical illness, I spent 10 years fighting with school systems to get my kid access to the classroom while she spent her childhood in hospitals. I begged for internet connection to the classroom-"impossible due to privacy issues".
Funny how quickly these same school systems got classes up online once ALL kids were affected. I busted my ass basically homeschooling a kid for 10 years to get her into college today. These kids are up and running online in a week. @DebraISchafer see how that works?
I'm thrilled that these kids are able to continue their schooling with this situation going on. But it proves that schools CAN connect and SHOULD connect kids who REGULARLY cannot be in the classroom due to chronic medical issues.
Right now, all of these kids do not receive equal access to an education as every other kid. @amyklobuchar broadband everywhere is great-what's better? Require school systems to USE it as an accommodation under IDEA for kids who do not have access to a classroom.
Too late for my kid whose family was educated/wealthy enough to provide the support to get her a high school degree (private tutors etc) and into college. Other kids whose families are without the means just get lost. #NoChildleftbehind
