The people treating this pandemic cavalierly are making me insane. Maybe I am an outlier, but I am taking every precaution I can. Today I had to do curbside pickup for my parents. I did one last week for them, but they just got home from wintering in South Carolina
So they have nothing because they always clear their pantry. So they need essentials- flour, eggs, salt, olive oil, baking soda, etc., on top of everything else.
I knew I was going to be their lifeline to the outer world before they even came home, so I started a soft isolation a week before they came home. I can’t help them if I know I am contaminated.
So they do their shopping at the Kroger online, and then I drive down there, go to one of the pickup places, and pull in a parking place. I call in, they say they will be out in a few and ask my space number.
I have a tarp in the trunk. I open the hatch and spread it out, the guy comes out, puts the groceries in the trunk while I sit in the car with the window up, when he is done I hand him a fiver in a lysol wipe.
I spray all the bags with lysol, cover the tarp, close the trunk, and then get in the car and use hand sanitizer. I drive home, spray it again, and place the bags on my parents porch. I leave a pair of Nitrile gloves for my parents to wear to carry it in. I then call them
and tell them the groceries are on the front porch, they come out, and I talk to them from thirty feet away.
I then go home, take my shoes off outside, go upstairs to the bathroom, strip down, put my clothes in the washer, and then shower.
I run the washer twice just to be sure.
That is what I am doing to protect my parents. It sounds nuts. And WV probably has nowhere near the virus saturation that other places do. But I do it, because I don’t want my parents to catch it and die. I do it because I do not want to catch it and become a drain
on an already stressed system. I do it because it’s the fucking responsible thing to do. There are parents with small kids and grandparents and immune suppressed people and people who have cancer and what not. How fucking selfish would it be for one of them to die because
I was uncareful. Half my state is elderly and has black lung or diabetes. This shit gets out in quantity around here and we will lose entire hollers of people.
And here is the kicker. It takes NO TIME AT ALL to do this. All it requires is not being a jackass.
So the people suggesting we open the country up so Trump’s hotel business can start making money is not just infuriating, it’s flabbergasting. Like, what planet are you on? What are you possibly thinking?
And dad, btw, take everything to the big tub in the laundry room and washes all the veg and wipes down all the packages before storing them. Because he does not want to die, either, even though I am his son and you would think he would.
