Most people who dismiss now the human cost of an economic meltdown; most of those who don’t see a balance between focus on health and on the economy, are anti-Trumpers. It’s ok. In a week or two they will know many people who are out of work. Let’s see their arrogance then.
For too many people in media, the #OPENAMERICANOW talk is political and/or ignorant of what is happening on the ground. Some are just too dumb to understand that “opening up” does not mean today or no focus on hygiene, gloves, testing etc once we do open.
No one sane says Coronavirus is a joke for younger people. The point is proportion! 72% deaths in NYC as of yesterday are seniors; 2.3% are under age of 45 (none under 18). Hence the lockdown focus needs to be first on seniors; secondary on the rest (to protect them and seniors.)
I keep hearing about a (magic) 14 days window. Ok, NY is choked off since early last week (March 16) and it got tighter two days ago. This means that - based on what everyone says about a 14 days doing the trick - April First can be a corner-turning moment. This does NOT mean
carelessness but since data shows the key issue is with seniors, the focus should be that seniors stay home for another two weeks and/or go out only in the AM; younger family should stay away from seniors; everyone who goes out should have gloves/masks; avoid handshakes.
In a “good” flu season 35,000 Americans die; in a bad one it is easily 70,000. Start of the season shows if it will be bad. Do we lock everyone up in a bad year from Nov to Jan to keep the number at 35K instead of 70K? No. “BUT YOSSI THIS IS WORSE.” Correct hence the measures but
#lockdowngovernors don’t say “if we can save one life it is worth it.” Or “health before economy” (as if a dead economic is not a health/human issue) even if it means saving 35K lives a year! So to set up policy with a goal of zero deaths is unheard of and unsustainable.
FINALLY! I have been tweeting for WEEKS that the first/main focus of isolation needs to be seniors (and other people secondary). Today, Cuomo says that sending home college students was maybe not smart and when we will reopen, the focus should be with younger people.
Cuomo also said today he thinks NY is another 14-21 days of the peak. This means that April First would be Day 8 of this new timeframe. BTW hospitalizations start a good week after exposure. Some cases later. Therefore, the peak level runs behind the lockdown by a week or two.
