Anyone who says he now soberly accepts the realiity of the pandemic. No. He switched claims. From we're doing a fantastic job, the virus is like 15 people to we're doing a fantastic job, if we did nothing it would be millions dead.

Those calling him sober are the marks.
Just watch the word "sober" tonight. Online and on TV. It will be like an x-ray.
Don't give me sober.

Sober is: "I was pretty far gone."

Sober is: "I can't believe some of the stupid things I said."

Or: "Now I can see that. Then I could not."

Sober is, "I knew it was no good. I just didn't care."

"I'm sorry for the hurt I caused." That's sober.
Sober? Look for yourself. @Acosta gave him a chance to be sober: "Has your thinking on this evolved?" Three times Acosta tried. Same refusal to face. Same gaseous self. Same hole in the soul. Go to 2:08:24 in this clip and telll me how sober he has gotten.

I have a proposal. The All Media Daily Briefing, independent from the one there has been such controversy about.

Here is a short sketch. THREAD

What: A daily briefing on where we are in fighting the Covid-19 virus

When: Every day for the forseeable future, 4 to 5 pm ET... 1/
Where: On the internet. Streaming video and audio always. Broadast whenever a particpating channel or station decides to pick it up. All guests appear remotely. All questions asked remotely. 2/
Why: Same reason there needs to be a daily briefing at the White House, but this one is independent from the White House. It provides a stream of factual and relevant information from experts who can speak with authority, and people on the front lines in a position to know. 3/

It is believed by many people who follow me that tougher, more confrontational questions — and more determined follow-ups — are the answer to press briefings on the virus that allow Trump to elude accountability.

I disagree. It's is one of my least popular conclusions. THREAD 1/
In my view, the lens through which we should interpret the briefings is how to increase the supply and circulation of good information about the virus and what has to be done, and decrease the spread of misinformation, strategic distraction, magical thinking, etc. 2/
From this POV, a key point to begin at is that Trump at the podium and on TV is the single most potent force for misinforming Americans about the dangers of the virus and what needs to be done now. Yet he is also the star and central figure in the briefings. See the problem? 3/

I have this dream that he gets up there with the task force behind him, and after his rambling boasts in a language that sounds like English run through a wood chipper, the moment for questions comes— and no one asks him a damn thing. All the Q's go to the people who know stuff.
Having thought it through as many ways as I can, my conclusion is that there is no justification — from within the public service logic of journalism — for continuing with coronavirus questions to Trump in the briefing room. The results are not just misleading, they are harmful.
No justification for the briefing room ritual IF the goal is to inform the public and equip people to make smart decisions. Other logics are available. It's fresh content. It glamorizes journalism. It creates conflict, which can be engaging. But from a public information POV? No.

This is the context of that video, reportedly related to the death of hospital director Liu Zhiming.
This is making the rounds, claiming to be Chinese escaping the country into Vietnam. I'm almost certain that it is misrepresented, and that this is not true.

If containment fails, and this projection comes true, the hardships that the world would experience during the onset of the first coronavirus pandemic would be hard to comprehended through our current eyes. A first for the modern world.
That’s further out, but if COVID-19 does break through to influenza scale, the benefit would be in a substantial population of immunity & antibodies. Those prospects are now where China is focusing. Antibody donation could improve outcomes; that’s moving from secondary priority.
The best outcome of a worst case scenario would be herd immunity. But, millions would die, medical infrastructure would be overwhelmed at even a fraction of the early generational spread, & the world would be on pause. Transfusion is not the golden ticket; you need a lot of infra

Unsurprisingly, more information was withheld by the Chinese government. COVID-19 had reached Guangdong by January 4th. Wuhan's lockdown only began on the 23rd. This is a probelm far bigger than Hubei and China.
Alternate reality: Theranos Ends Pandemic
It's so sad to read these stories of China's state of unrest. Trust is degraded. This is not a society that will return to normal with a snap of fingers and bans lifted. China is damaged, could be for years, & we're not even near the end of this epidemic.

They are admitting an overnight increase of 15,000 new cases in 24 hrs!

It's been edging up consistently at a much lower rate.

What is happening in Wuhan is not related to a biological weapon, or a human-caused accidental release, and this emergent reporting of a Chinese national being removed from a Canadian lab is in no way related.
