NIGHTLY READING THREAD: Welcome to Edition #18 of #GMGreads. Every night through this weird time, I'm tweeting out a list of my five favorite books around a general theme—and a link to an indie bookstore where you can order them online....
I'm interviewing for my @WIRED living oral history of the Covid-19 pandemic—a new chapter publishes tomorrow!—which has me thinking about translating spoken words to printed words. Tonight, we're featuring @onemorepagebooks & my five favorite oral histories, with a little twist:
1) The best oral history I've ever come across is actually fictional: Max Brooks (@maxbrooksauthor) WORLD WAR Z, about the zombie apocalypse. I've given it over the years to several writers to help them learn the oral history form. onemorepagebooks.com/book/978030734…
2) George Saunders' LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, another fictional oral history, might be the best book I've ever read. I wish I could read this book again for the 1st time. I spent a lot of time while writing ONLY PLANE IN THE SKY thinking about Saunders' craft. onemorepagebooks.com/book/978081298…
3) If you've never read Studs Terkel before, you're missing out on one of the quintessential American writers, telling a quintessential American story. Start with WORKING, but he's also done THE GOOD WAR, HARD TIMES, and others: onemorepagebooks.com/book/978156584…
4) Svetlana Alexievich won the Nobel Prize in Literature for her collected stories of Russian voices. I've read SECONDHAND TIME, about the end of the Soviet Union, onemorepagebooks.com/book/978039958… and heard great things about THE UNWOMANLY FACE OF WAR: onemorepagebooks.com/book/978039958…
5) If you liked the movie "1917" or "They Shall Not Grow Old," you should pick up Peter Englund's THE BEAUTY AND THE SORROW, an "intimate history" of the First World War: onemorepagebooks.com/book/978030773…

THREAD: This weekend, the Surgeon General said we're entering dark days with COVID-19. "It's going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment.... It's going to be happening all over the country." Yet, we are facing this crisis with critical vacancies across our government....
1) After 9/11, we literally created two new entities to help protect against future such events: @DHSgov and @ODNIgov. Now as we face the biggest national test since 9/11, Trump has let both entities atrophy, and they're riddled with key vacancies....
2) The top jobs in both lack Senate-confirmed appointees. At DHS, there's no Secretary or Deputy Secretary. The DHS Secretary job will have been vacant for a *year* as of Friday. At ODNI, there's no Dir of National Intelligence, nor Principal Dep Dir, nor head of the @NCTCGov.

THREAD: I spent last week collecting the stories of New Yorkers at the epicenter, telling the story of their horrendous COVID-19 epidemic in their own words for @WIRED's living oral history. I wanted to share some of their observations: wired.com/story/new-york…
1) Remember, first, the scale of what's about to unfold. This weekend, a New Yorker is dying every two minutes because of COVID-19. Every. Two Minutes. And the next two weeks will be worse. Single days may very well see a death toll equal or greater than 9/11.
2) An ER doctor told me: "At this point, everyone has the fucking disease. The really sick people are on one side, the moderately sick are on the other. Everyone is Covid positive, Covid positive."

My friend got in Addis yesterday night and shared with me the quarantine measures at the airport and her experience:

She flew Emirates & passengers were given a declaration form ( @flyethiopian ) to fill out that they agree to pay USD 1,750 as seen in the photo.
+ NO OTHER HOTEL OPTION listed 2/
The flight had a lot of domestic workers from Dubai who were from different regions of #Ethiopia. The form was only in English. Some couldn't understand what was written down. Most of them in the plane refused to sign it because it was a lot of money. 3/

#THREAD HK Education Minister said the authority will adopt harsher measures on teachers arrested and complained in protest-related incidents to “correct mistakes”.
Around 80 teachers were arrested in #HKProtests and 123 complaints on teachers were filed to the Buro.
Among the 123 complaints, 74 have completed probe. 44 were found valid. 13/44 have received foloup actions including 7 extortion letters, 5 condemnation letters, 1 warning letter. 31 cases are waiting for or considering teachers’ explanations.
1 government school teacher was suspended for using “inappropriate teaching materials”
2 subsidised school teachers were suspended for speech that has “deviated common values recognised by the society”.
2 teachers left their jobs amid complaints and probes.

[#Thread] Welcome to night of the long threads part two, this one's on #Algeria. A few of you got in touch (@fatenaggad & @OpenAlgeriaOrg) to ask about the trend #كلنا_زغماتي , which translates as "we are all Zeghmati". Belkacem Zeghmati was appointed Attorney general earlier
2/ this year. However, Zeghmati is at odds with the country's judges after they went on strike after a huge reshuffle. The strike threatens the #December12 elections in Algeria, which are being opposed by the opposition who believe it will just lead to the continuation of an
3/ elite junta. So essentially, the hashtag "we are all Zeghmati" is seen as supporting the status quo, a quasi military government that doesn't represent the democratic demands by many Algerians. Anyway, next up is the analysis, which will add to a great one by @AymeneZermane

[#Thread] 1/ This thread is on Tulsi Gabbard and the inordinate amount of support she appears to have online from #MAGA and pro-Trump accounts. Accounts that some believe to be part of an influence operation - Russian or otherwise. The findings are quite startling... #polbots
2/ I analysed several batches of tweets. Most of these are from between 15th and 20th of October. I analysed the hashtags #Tulsi2020 and #TulsiGabbard. I also analysed #QueenOfWarmongers, which refers to Tulsi's tweet where she called Hilary Clinton the 'queen of warmongers'
3/ Here is a link to that tweet, which was retweeted 79k times. I removed duplicates from my main sample of accounts tweeting on "Tulsi 2020" and "Tulsi Gabbard". This left around 10,000 unique accounts producing in the region of around 20,000 tweets.

This time I've refactored some of the code and I added a few new things: health popups, crates and warps!

 health popups will display your health (and the enemy's too) when in combat or when picking up a potion. The same popup will also, well, pop up when you collect items, money or experience points!

 Crates serve as static obstacles that the knight can destroy to make way. In the future, these crates will have a chance of containing items to collect.
