In Southern Europe, Portugal really stands out in gender roles in the labour market: women in Portugal were (and still are now) more likely to hold a job or be looking for one than in Spain, Italy or Greece (OECD data)
What is interesting is that high employment rates for women in Portugal are - unlike Northern Europe, esp. the Netherlands - associated with a low share of part-time employment. Women work more often, and more often full-time.
I remember mentioning the Dutch model of female part-time employment to Portuguese trade unionists. For them, given the low level of Portuguese salaries, full-time employment for both earners in the household was the only way to make ends meet.
The gender wage gap is also much higher in Portugal (no data for Spain here) data.oecd.org/earnwage/gende…
