seeing as we can't talk about other things on here today 😬 & given that I've spent the past week poring over the #TeTārukeāTāwhiri: #Auckland's #Climate Plan text again, I thought you might be interested in a few key parts of the Plan that are often overlooked.
1/x
👏👍🎉🌏💪
first off, why Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri?
a gift from the mana whenua of Tāmaki, this cultural narrative is deeply emebedded in this place, but critically "...calls for a change in our response, from a human-centred approach to an ecological-centred approach..." 2/x
Mana Whenua, through the Kaitiki Forum, have played a key role in developing our #ClimateAction response, drawing together wisdom & knowledge of Tāmaki w/ the understanding that living systems & #whakapapa relationships are key to #wellbeing, #sustainability & #resilience. 3/x
#equity has been another key consideration for #TeTārukeāTāwhiri, recognising our commitment through @c40cities' Global #GreenNewDeal "...to create thriving and fair communities for everyone; with inclusive, equitable #ClimateAction at the centre of all decision making..." 4/x
the Plan also looks at broader international commitments and frameworks such as the #SDGs, both in terms oftheir linkage to overarching strategies such as the #AucklandPlan as well as their specific role in driving #climate mitigation & adaptation. 5/x
one last element to draw out for now are the insights (& challenge) developed & set out by #rangatahi in recognition of their unique & critical role in addressing #ClimateChange and need to 'ka noho teina te tangata' (check it out 👇) & be haututu (explorers & disruptors). 5/x
our emissions reduction story is well known, our profile & the changes we need.
but the urgency & need for #CollectiveAction is critical.
our emissions are still rising.
we need bold ambitious action.
from everyone & everywhere.
if we are to keep to our 1.5°C carbon budget. 6/x
but it's important we don't just look at emissions reduction alone.
we are on a path to a 3.5°C future & we need to prepare for this.
that doesn't need mean need to take every adaptation action now, but we need to know the pathways, triggers & decision points for action. 7/x
a few final adds to this 🧵 before usual service resumes...
there are 50 action areas in #TeTārukeāTāwhiri, but a few key ones (imho)...
in the #NaturalEnvironment space, harnessing #NatureBasedSolutions is not only critical for #climate, but for #biodiversity & #liveability. 8/x
the key #BuiltEnvironment action has to be our focus on #LowCarbon, #climate-#resilient outcomes in our planning system. the #growth part also needs a serious look...
for #Transport, I couldn't really narrow it down to one 😬, but it's probably no surprise my favourites 9/x
I've posted my views on the need for a more #resilient, #regenerative & #distributive #economy before...
for #CommunitiesAndCoast, the need to enable all Aucklanders to have their say is pretty topical today but preparing for #ClimateMigration is a must for the future 10/x
Te Puāwaitanga ō te Tātai is probably one of the hardest priority areas to describe, but is super important both in and of itself, but also how the values and principles are woven into the other priority areas 11/x
the final two priority areas centre on #Food, and #EnergyAndIndustry.
for food, protecting our productive soils whilst also increasing supply & demand for local, seasonal & #LowCarbon are 2 key areas, whilst #energy is often overlooked in #NZ, there is still much we can do 12/x
