On 22 Oct 1947 five thousand Kabaili tribals from Pakistan invaded #Kashmir’s Muzaffarabad, rampaging, looting and killing innocent civilians on their way up to #Baramulla. However their advance was halted at Baramulla thanks to a brave 19 year old Maqbool Sherwani.

#MaqboolSherwani, single handedly thwarted the advance of thousands of #Pakistani raiders from #Baramulla, thereby giving valuable time to the #IndianArmy to land in #Srinagar and save #Kashmir.

Sherwani went around on his bike telling the Kabailis, who had stormed #Baramulla on October 22, 1947, not to advance towards #Srinagar as the #IndianArmy had reached the outskirts of Baramulla.

His bluff worked. The enemy froze in its tracks for four days. By then, #IndianArmy landed in #Srinagar. When the #Pakistani Kabailis came to know of #Sherwani's game plan, they shot him dead and crucified him.

The #Pakistani Kabailis were not able to digest that a young boy had fooled them. According to eyewitnesses the Kabailis had slung an almost dead #Sherwani on a motorcycle across the petrol tank.

He was put on a wooden cross, nailed and fired upon 10-15 times. He remained like that for three days. His body was brought down when the #IndianArmy reached #Baramulla. Sherwani's body was buried by the Indian Army with full military #honours.

It was the bravery of Sherwani that gave #IndianArmy precious time to prepare for the historic #Battle of #Shalateng. Over 700 raiders were killed here, the army made sure Sherwani’s sacrifice didn’t go in vain.

Sherwani was a true nationalist. In 1944 when Mohammad Ali Jinnah visited #Kashmir and spoke at #Baramulla on his 'two-nation' theory Sherwani forced him to come down from the platform and stopped his speech.

Later that evening, the Muslim Conference supporters chased Sherwani who, in order to save himself, jumped into the River Jhelum and swam across to safety.

Every year, on its Infantry Day, the #IndianArmy commemorates the saviour of #Kashmir Maqbool Sherwani. Army has also constructed a Memorial Hall in his name in #Baramulla town.
