Thread: 12 October 2022: Day 231 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Israel could help #Ukraine with air defences without even having to reassess its misguided policy of appeasing #Russia in the belief Moscow is helpful vis-a-vis Iran in Syria.
The international NGOs did not perform very well at the outset of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine, and still rather lag behind. The gap has been filled by local activists and especially the Orthodox Christian churches and related religious organisations.
The #US rightly saying there can be no ambiguity or neutrality about what #Russia has done in #Ukraine. The targets of this message are not named, but Israel and India would clearly be among them.
#Germany’s Chancellor still insisting that not only has globalisation been a success (maybe, depending how you rig the parameters) but that *continued* deep economic ties with #China is a good idea, rather than decoupling and working to destroy the CCP.
The end-point of the "de-escalation" meme: worrying that supplying #Ukraine with air defences - the sole purpose of which is to prevent #Russia attacking civilian populations - is an escalatory move. It will, after all, annoy the Kremlin.
"#Russia has ordered 2,400 #Iranian-made Shahed drones from the Islamic Republic, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said [on Oct 11 while] speaking via video link at the G7 summit" iranintl.com/en/202210111957
Excellent: "#China is to be formally designated a 'threat' to #Britain ... Under [Boris] Johnson, China had been categorised as a 'systemic competitor' but the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, wants to take a more hawkish stance quickly" theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
#Poland's pipeline operator PERN said it has detected a leak in one Druzba oil pipeline. PERN said the causes of the leak are unknown. "The damaged line was immediately turned off. The other line of the [Druzhba] oil pipeline is operating without changes". politico.eu/article/poland…
#Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief thanks #Poland for the training that has helped the Ukrainians bring down the #Iran-supplied drones #Russia has been using against Ukrainian cities over the last few days.
#Russia is reported to have constructed two pontoon bridge crossings near the village of Darivka in the Kherson Oblast. pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2022/…
"#Ukrainian comedian, politician, and volunteer Serhiy Prytula said that he and activist Serhii Sternenko had raised nearly $10 million in one day to buy RAM ІІ kamikaze drones for the army" in a "revenge" crowdfunding campaign after #Russia's missiles. kyivindependent.com/uncategorized/…
Notable speech by @JosepBorrellF: acknowledges that the #EU did not see #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine coming, even after the #US warned them it was imminent, and that the whole Brussels apparatus reacted too slowly at every stage
#Russia has released pictures purporting to show that the explosives in the truck on the Crimea Bridge must have been well-hidden. As ever, the most revealing thing was unintentional - namely how shoddy the Russian security is on the Bridge.
"In the three weeks since it began, #Russia's mobilization campaign has kneecapped the country's education system. ... Russian teachers, who aren't exempt from the draft, are going into hiding and fleeing the country in droves." meduza.io/en/feature/202…
Wish-casting from Igor Girkin ("Strelkov") if he believes #Russia can sustain these missile barrages on #Ukraine for one week, let alone several, and that the mobiks will have any effect beyond spreading disorder throughout the Army.
State Department cannot answer whether it supports the protesters calling for regime change in #Iran on the grounds that it would violate the principle of non-interference that has the US support Ukraine against Russia's invasion ... mad
In Izyum, in July, a 52-year-old woman who had worked for the gas company and whose son was in the #Ukrainian intelligence agency, was held in a shed outside a medical clinic for ten days by #Russia's soldiers, where she was repeatedly tortured and raped. washingtonpost.com/world/2022/10/…
#pt: "'We'll beat the Ukrainian out of you here, you won't come out of here alive', [Russian soldiers] told [a captive Ukrainian woman in Izyum]. 'Either you accept our rules and acknowledge that you live in Russia or you'll go missing. No one will find you, ever'."
#pt: "Inside the main clinic building [in Izyum], where [Ukrainian] detainees were tortured [by Russian soldiers], the German words 'Truth Sets You Free' were…on the wall in what appeared to be a nod to the Nazis' use of 'Work Sets You Free'—the slogan on the gate to Auschwitz"
The idea of a sustained campaign of missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian civilian populations has appeared across the pro-Kremlin messaging space - from Russian state television to the military blogs and Telegram and, of course, Girkin/Strelkov.
A #Russian officer explains the war on #Ukraine as an Orthodox jihad, a "holy war" against "Satanists" who would impose "LGBT parades" on Russia. The war is to preserve a society with "mothers, fathers, God, religion, and everything else that the Almighty gave us".
Apart from Russia itself, the only votes in Moscow's favour were Belarus (a province of the Russian Federation), Syria and Nicaragua (Russian colonies), and North Korea (a colony of Russia's Chinese partner).
Nobody knows more about car bombs than @HKaaman: conclusion is the Kerch Bridge explosion was an unwitting suicide car bombing orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence in an intricate and impressive operation, funnelling the "device" through Russia itself.
23 #Russians on four yachts have fled to #South_Korea since late September, but only two of them were granted entry. The others "were rejected because their purposes were unclear and they did not have sufficient documents," said an ROK MP. reuters.com/world/russians…
Apparently #Russia filling out the ranks of the Army with criminals isn't helping with cohesion and discipline. A surprise and perhaps even a shock and

Cretinous. #France's President Macron playing into #Russia's propaganda about "World War [Three]".
In an interview on "France 2", #France's President Macron said French "vital interests ... would not be at stake if there was a nuclear ballistic attack in Ukraine or in the region" by #Russia. politico.eu/article/france…

Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Ukraine is advancing on both the north-east front, bearing down on the Luhansk Oblast that #Russia claimed to annex on Sept. 30, and on the southern front in Kherson.
Map of #Ukraine's recent advances, liberating a swath of territory in the southern #Kherson Oblast from #Russia's occupation.

Latest @DefenceHQ update: on Sept. 30, #Putin signed the regular annual conscription order; these recruits are not "legally" allowed to be deployed outside of #Russia, unlike those conscripted under the mobilisation order of Sept. 21. Training, equipping, etc. all a struggle.
This is a terribly depressing thread on @WarintheFuture's latest article, showing that there is much less than meets the eye to #Australia's support for #Ukraine.
Thread: 3 October 2022: Day 222 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
Latest @DefenceHQ update: #Putin publicly said on Sept. 29 that there were issues with the mobilisation he ordered on Sept. 21. This "unusually rapid acknowledged of problems highlights the dysfunction": the scope is unclear to lower officials and training perfunctory at best.
Thread: 30 September 2022: Day 219 of #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine
#Putin's "annexation" announcement today will, it seems, occur in the shadow of #Ukraine taking back territories that are being claimed as new parts of #Russia.
