Ramchandra Vinayak Patwardhan aka Annasaheb was born in a #ChitpavanBrahmin family in 1847. He was muscular and had dedicated himself to a physical culture in his youth. He claimed to have the strength of a horse.
Annasaheb would dare British soldiers to a race on foot from Wanowrie to Swargate (around 6km). It was a passion for him to outpace and defeat them.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan wore many hats with ease. He completed his BA from #Mumbai, trained as a lawyer and then learnt medicine! He was also a Vedic scholar.
While studying medicine, #AnnasahebPatwardhan pointed to some mistakes made by the examiner. As a result, he was made to appear for the same exam six times!
Annasaheb was both, a lawyer and a medical practitioner. He was a renowned lawyer with a booming practice. #AnnasahebPatwardhan however refused to take his fees from his patients and treated them for free.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan lived in a wada behind the Shaniwarwada in #Pune. He was associated with revolutionaries like Vasudeo Balwant Phadke. A photo of Annasaheb's residence is attached to this tweet.
Phadke learnt shooting, using weapons like the 'dandpatta', swords, spears etc from Krantiveer Lahuji Vastad Salve and Ranba Mahar who stayed in Vetal Peth.
Lahuji Vastad Salve had another illustrious student who would leave his stamp on history--#MahatmaJotibaPhule. Phule and his friends Walvekar and Paranjape had trained under him.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan too learnt the use of weapons like the dandpatta with Phadke in Lahuji Vastad and Ranba Mahar's training school. The duo use to teach their students at Gultekdi in #Pune.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan wanted to liberate a province, which could be used as a base by the revolutionaries in their activities against the #British. He zeroed in on Berar (present-day western Vidarbha) which had been mortgaged to the British by the #Nizam of #Hyderabad.
He wanted to launch a bank in #Hyderabad, loan a massive amount running into crores (a much bigger fortune in those days than today) to the Nizam, and help him get possession of Berar. Then, Annasaheb would take over the administration of that region.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan had taken Salarjung, the chief minister of the #Nizam into confidence for it. However, Salarjung's sudden death frustrated these plans but Annasaheb had to bear the financial liabilities.
#AnnasahebPatwardhan was also a mentor to young revolutionaries like Damodar Balwant Bhide aka Bhatji. The samadhi of this unknown, unsung freedom fighter is in the premises of the Omkareshwar temple in #Pune.

The rise of #Japan as a military and industrial power and the crushing defeat inflicted by it on #Russia in the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5) inspired Indian nationalists. The country was also seen as a counter-weight to the European powers.
30 October 1883 marks the death anniversary of #SwamiDayanandSaraswati. This is a thread on the links between the #AryaSamaj & the #HinduMahasabha & the #RSS. It will also explain how the Samaj contributed to the growth of the #Sangh
The #AryaSamaj was founded on 10 April 1875 at Bombay (#Mumbai) by Swami #DayanandSaraswati. This monotheistic order laid stress on the values laid down in the #Vedas & was against idol worship.
As a counter to the proselytizing Abrahamic faiths like Christianity and Islam, the #AryaSamaj launched a reconversion campaign called #shuddhi. As the #HinduMahasabha grew in the 1920s, many #AryaSamaj leaders joined it. Shuddhi became one of the Mahasabha's driving forces
How #Dussehra was once a rallying point for the Swadeshi movement. It was on this day in 1905 that #VinayakDamodarSavarkar organised a massive bonfire of imported clothes
Bhawanrao 'Balasaheb' Pantpratinidhi (1868-1951) who ruled Aundh in #Maharashtra was an unusual king. His work at reforming criminals & convicts inspired V.Shantaram's acclaimed ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ (1957). Balasaheb was born on 24 October 1868 #history#Marathi#films#art
Unlike rulers who tried to cling to power even when the end of British rule was evident, #BalasahebPantpratinidhi handed over the reins of the state to the people much earlier in an experiment inspired by #MahatmaGandhi. He also helped freedom fighters & revolutionaries.
In a sense, #BalasahebPantpratinidhi was among the reformist kings who tried to birth welfare states in colonial India. He was also associated with one of the most popular forms of exercises—the suryanamaskars.
What is common between saints like Sai Baba of #Shirdi, Jangli Maharaj & Bidkar Maharaj (#Pune), Vidyanand Saraswati (Ahmednagar) & Swami Samartha of #Akkalkot? They may have had links with revolutionaries trying to overthrow #British rule over #India #history#Maharashtra#Pune
This is a thread on sadhus and holy men and how they tried to aid the revolutionary struggle against the British.
Some holy men like Sant Bairagi Baba, who may have been Rango Bapuji Gupte, Swami Brahmananda from Digras in Yavatmal, Vitthalgiri Bua (Amravati) & Swami Nityanand were part of the 1857 war of independence. #1857
This is a thread on the tradition of #wrestling in #Pune. The city was once known as a centre of wrestling. Even in those conservative times, these akhadas or wrestling schools acted as melting pots. #sports#Maharashtra#Marathi#caste
The vastads or wrestling coaches included both, non-Brahmins & Brahmins. Their students too cut across communities.
Balambhatdada Deodhar, the man who is said to have invented the sport of mallakhamb, Bhikobadada Agashe, Ganpatrao Barve, Pandoba Jog, Dada Damle were among the #Brahmin vastads in #Pune.
