It's Thursday and it's Day 358 of #Russia's illegal war on its peaceful neighbour and another daily thread
Yet again the day started violently for many regions of #Ukraine with overnight missile attacks targeting critical civilian infrastructure, which is itself a war crime...
Apologies for the late start today, I've had meetings from first thing, which overran a little
First, here the link for yesterday's thread as I know a few of you like to read back in one go and others like to catch up with that they missed in the evening:
So to the overnight attack by #Russia with Cruise missiles and more.
#Ukraine says it shot down 16 out of 32 missiles. Twelve Kh-22 hypersonic missiles cannot be intercepted with current defences.
It's likely #Russia is using a high % of Kh-22 stocks before Patriot is in place
Missiles were fired by #Russia from long range bombers in the Caspian Sea and Kursk regions, from two Su-35 tactical aircraft in the occupied part of #Zaporizhzhia and from frigate ships in the Black Sea
There is a current nationwide air alert in #Ukraine with more enemy aircraft active. Earlier the Southern Command predicted a high possibility of another missile attack by #Russia.
Ukraine's energy company says there are no restrictions following the overnight strikes.
Most damage may have occurred in #Kremenchuk where it's likely the hydroelectric power plant was hit:
Here's a video from #Pavlohrad (RU: #Pavlograd) where one woman's now known to have died in the missile attack.
Officials in #Dnipropetrovsk region say 7 private houses were destroyed, 50 others damaged.
were hit. 8 other residents were injured, 2 remain hospitalised.
In #Lviv, invaders also hit one "critical infrastructure" facility in region
This was confirmed by the head of the Lviv OVA Maksym Kozytskyi. But he said it was not an energy facility & there were no victims.
"A fire broke out at the place of impact, but it's been extinguished."
Yesterday #Lufthansa denied it was attacked by #Russia's hackers when all flights were grounded. They claimed a cable had been accidentially cut through. Russian group KILLNET said it was them
Well now hackers are hitting all #Germany's airport websites.
The invaders claim the craft was trying to land on an island in the river. But the footage is so bizarre I'm surprised they released it; certainly not convincing proof of anything.
Western + Russian media alike wrote a lot of nonsense about #Moldova's govt falling recently.
With a big pro-western majority, it was always going to be another Euro-aligned administration and so it's proved.
Dorin Rechan is the new PM. Only 4 fresh faces in the 17-person cabinet
#Slovakia is the latest country to denounce #Russia as a Terrorist State.
The Parliament in Bratislava recognised Putin's regime as terrorist, and the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Slovakia also showed support for a war crimes tribunal.
Found out who the one civilian freed from Russian captivity today is.
It's Ivan Samoidiuk, Deputy Mayor of #Energodar.
He was kidnapped 11 months ago on 19 March 2022 when #Russia occupied the town and the nuclear reactor.
In #Bakhmut not much change. #Russia's frontline is getting closer. #Ukraine could fall back from the town at any moment but no sign of them needing to do so yet.
Meanwhile more footage of the town council building damaged last week, and new shots from inside the structure.
Meanwhile also in #Bakhmut, @CNN has obtained the best footage so far of the murder of Pete Reed while helping volunteers and medics in #Ukraine.
The American vet was killed in this strike. #Wagner chief Prigozhin says "I can say with confidence Reed was killed by his own side."
The sign says NET VO**E - almost universally understood as "No to War", but you can get jailed for 10 years for this.
So the young person says "alcohol can harm your health" - NET VO***E could be "NET VODKE"
Brazenly, the woman appointed #Russia's Commissioner for Children's Rights, admitts on camera she stold a child from #Mariupol.
Maria Lvova-Belova was proud to thank the Tsar after "adopting" a 15 year old, who likely lived a happy, peaceful life until 24 February. #WarCrime
The leader of the Opposition in #UK, @Keir_Starmer visited #Kyiv for the first time today. His visit came the day after he banned Russia-sympathist Jeremy Corbyn from standing at the next election.
No reports of any damage yet. Some Russians reporting their own air defence may have hit their own missile - perhaps one malfunctioned?
Whenever I see John Simpson back in #Ukraine, I'm reminded of his odious article a few years back where he clearly showed his contempt for the country. I'm surprised @ZelenskyyUa and @AndriyYermak don't demand another interviewer.
No real clarification from #Kharkiv.
It is known S-300s were again fired at the city.
The local governor says "infrastructural objects are once again under the sights of the occupiers."
It's known the Osnovianskyi district, just south of the centre was under heaviest attack.
There's a huge column of Russian trucks moving in the occupied south of #Ukraine.
The former Mayoral adviser to #Mariupol posted these photos. He claims almost the whole 80km between Mariupol and #Berdyansk is solid with these KAMAZ military lorries.
Daily losses for #Russia heading back up again according to #Ukraine.
A further 800 of the Kremlin's soldiers fertilising the rich soil. Also Cruise missiles high for obvious reasons and a notable increase in technical vehicles/fuel tanks.
This is the start of Wednesday's daily thread with news and analysis from #Russia's war on #Ukraine.
This is Day 357, which has started relatively quietly.

On Tuesday we learned of the death of an 8th British man in the war in #Ukraine
He's now been named as 45 year old Jonathan Shenkin, born in Glasgow but living in London. Mr Shenkin enlisted for the Ukrainian army & worked as a paramedic.
His family describe him as a hero.
RIP

USA + Ireland already withdrew.
Theyre all angry at Putin's mate, IBA President Umar Kremlev, who's allowing Russians to fight under 🇷🇺flag insidethegames.biz/articles/11336…
Day 355 of the brutal war started by #Russia on its peaceful neighbour. Very nearly 10 years since the first invasion of #Ukraine and the world did nothing, hoping the aggression would stop. The world did the same after Georgia. Nothing stopped. Dictators don't stop voluntarily
I'm tweeting from Manchester airport ahead of the Premiere of my new film "Ukraine: A War On Two Fronts" in Brussels this lunchtime.
I should be able to post a link to the live stream here a little nearer the time.
Before I go any further, immense thanks to Scott Vierling for the very generous donation via Ko-Fi which I saw when the alarm clock went off far too early!
Thanks to everyone for all support, be it cash, encouragement or tip-offs.💙💛
Welcome to the daily thread for Sunday 12 February.

Today's data show another 900 deaths for #Russia but also noteworthy figures of tanks and artillery systems destroyed - both well above the daily mean.
Day 353 of the war in Europe. #Ukraine fights for a nation, for liberty, in the name of democracy. #Russia fights for a small man in a bunker breaking, committing war crimes.
Here's yet another daily🧵 all the news in one place.
