Liberals in India are over the moon because of the Congress' victory in the #KarnatakaElectionResults2023

But public memory is short.

(1/)
In November 2018, six months before the general elections of 2019, the #BJP lost to the Congress in three major states: #MadhyaPradesh, #Chattisgarh, and #Rajasthan.

Yet, in the 2019 Parliamentary elections, the BJP came back to power with a bigger majority than in 2014.

(2/)
The BJP got 303 seats on their own in the 2019 #LokSabha elections, compared to 282 in 2014 - and the Congress had only 52 seats, a gain of a mere 8 seats compared to 2014.

And the Congress has won only one major state this time.

(3/)
Another data point: in 2015, the #AAP won 67/70 Assembly seats in #Delhi. But when the 2019 elections came, the AAP couldn't win a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi. The BJP swept all six seats.

So assembly elections are a different ballgame from Lok Sabha elections.

(4/)
Assembly elections are about local issues, whereas Lok Sabha elections are about national issues. The BJP's defeat in the #KarnatakaElectionResults2023 has more to do with a perception of corruption and incompetence of the Karnataka BJP government.

(5/)
Although Modi campaigned heavily in Karnataka, this is not a judgement on Modi or his governance.

It would probably be accurate to say that despite his best efforts, Modi could not reverse the negative opinion of the people of Karnataka against the BJP government.

(6/)
What these results prove is that anti-Muslim bigotry will not be enough to turn the tide when the people are really angry with you. This is especially true in South India, because unlike the North, they have been prosperous and don't like their prosperity ruined.

(7/)
In UP or MP, people don't have many expectations of prosperity, and they are so miserable that poor performance is barely noticed. You can win elections by blaming Muslims.

South Indians hold you to a higher standard. Bigotry is okay, but only after prosperity is ensured.

(8/)
But things are different in national elections. Prosperity is largely seen as the responsibility of the state government. Modi will be judged on national issues - the national economic policies and their effects like GST, jobs, and... Bigotry.

Yes, that's right.

(9/)
Bigotry is a national issue. And different things are weighed differently. Some may think Modi is doing poorly on China, but he makes up for it by building temples and oppressing Muslims. Unemployment may get a negative score, but CAA /NRC may get a positive score.

(10/)
No, I am not being facetious here. Most Indians understand that Hindutva is a national issue. The BJP may lose points in Karnataka because Lingayats or Vokkaliggas or Kurubas or Reddys are unhappy with the state government, but all of them hate Muslims.

(11/)
And if all of them hate Muslims, they may think Modi is the best man to do something about it - like, for instance, UCC, CAA, NRC, and Hindu Rashtra.

So don't get ahead of yourselves. It's nice to get a win, but this isn't over by a long shot.

(12/)
Now that you have finished celebrating, it's time to sober up.

Modi is still the overwhelming favorite to win 2024.

I wouldn't bet my money against him.

The #SupremeCourtOfIndia has made some strong remarks about the abuse and weaponization of the #EnforcementDirectorate for political purposes.

It has also strongly censured a lower court judge in a case where bail was not given.

(1/)
The Supreme Court reminded the lower court judge of a fundamental principle of #jurisprudence: bail is the norm, jail is the exception. The Court made the scathing observation that the said judge should go back to law school.

(2/)
These are only two examples of how #BJP governments have been abusing power and bending the law to suit their desired ends.

One could point to the extrajudicial measure of "#bulldozer justice," which has been practiced by the BJP governments in #UP, #MP, and in #Delhi.

It's now 12.21 pm, and the #KarnatakaElectionResults are firming up.

#CongressParty is leading in 124/224 seats, and #BJP is leading in 70, according to the #ECI website.

Whatever horse trading happens now, it is clear that this is a humiliating defeat for #PMModi

(1/4)
#Modi put his personal prestige on the line and addressed several mega rallies in Karnataka. The roads of Bangalore were closed off for several days so that Modi could do his roadshows.

Given all that, this is a huge #flop

Modi's image has taken a beating.

(2/4)
What this tells us is that:

Modi cannot make up for lousy governance.

The #doubleenginesarkara has failed #Karnataka

Other states may have doubts about enlisting Modi's help when their turn comes.

India's so-called "liberals" have been shedding copious tears on the "injustice" of the SC verdict on the #ShivSena case.

Indian liberals are brainless and shameless.

The Shiv Sena was, is, and will be a bigoted party, whichever flavour you pick - Uddhav, Raj, or Shinde.

(1/)
Don't forget that #UddhavThackeray fought the election along with the #BJP. He split with the #BJP only when they refused to yield the CM post to him.

The alliance with the #Congress and #NCP was never about principle, it was for power. This was an unprincipled power grab.

(2/)
This is still the same Shiv Sena that supported the Babri Masjid demolition, that supported the installation of the portrait of #Savarkar opposite that of #Gandhi in Parliament (kinda like #Trump saying there are good folks on both sides), that engineered the #1993riots.

Just watched the #CNNTownhall with 2024 Presidential candidate and former President @realDonaldTrump , as well as the post-townhall panel discussion.

One thing is clear: #America is a broken country. It's split right down the middle.

(1/)
Racial divisions and #massshootings are peaking, the economy is cratering, #poverty and #homelessness are rising.

And meanwhile, the US government is involved in, or threatening to get involved in, wars from #Ukraine to #Taiwan to #Syria to #Iran to #NorthKorea.

(2/)
When they should be working on healing the divisions in their own nation. White vs non-White, Rural vs Urban, Rich vs Poor, drug addiction, broken homes - all these are tearing America apart.

This tweet by a retired wealthy industrialist with too much time on his hands and no idea what to do with it illustrates what is wrong with India.

He extols the virtues of a clay water storage unit, the surahi, from the mid-20th century.

(1/)

Of course, while he lives in unimaginable luxury, the likes of which we can't dream of.

It's a foolish comparison, because the surahi can only store and cool water by a few degrees, whereas the fridge can cool anything, preserve food, and make ice (needed for his scotch).

(2/)
But that didn't stop Indian twitterati from going ga-ga over his tweet. Why?

Because if there's one thing guaranteed to give you applause in India today, it is hearkening to the past.
Our grandparents had the most wonderful life. Our country was great in the good old days.

Independent India has always been a vibrant democracy, except for the #Emergency years of #IndiraGandhi from 1975-77. That it has taken a decisive turn to religious majoritarianism under the #BJP and under #Modi since 2014 doesn't change that fact. (1/)
Democracy is not necessarily congruent with liberal values or even human rights. #Slavery was legal both in the democracy of Great Britain as well as the USA for almost a hundred years since the US' formation. Even a White woman was not considered equal to a man in America. (2/)
#Blacks in the #US did not have equal rights even after the abolition of slavery for another 100 years under #Lincoln, but we still think of the US in #1960 as a democracy.
