/ Welcome to Tuesday in the chilly independent republic of Brexitlandia ⛄️
/ Cretinus Maximus @DavidDavisMP reassured the nation he was the right man for the job by proclaiming he did not need to be clever or know very much. He just had to be calm. 😳
/ As if to prove his credentials he first described Friday's deal (the Great Capitulatory Fudge) as a statement of intent only then to backtrack and say it was more than legally binding 🙄
/ The correct answer when the UK is under a duty of sincere cooperation under EU law is that it is politically binding and the EU will want to be legally binding. Stay calm folks 🤗
/ The Maybot was on fine form as over the weekend she had new components fitted from a Commodore 64 and was feeling magic 💃🏻
/ The Maybot declared the Great Capitulatory Fudge was good news for leavers and remainers 👍🏻
/ Good for leavers because the UK is leaving the EU with no certainty of a deal and good for remainers because if there is no deal the U.K. will follow all EU rules. 😳
/ Which means no say in those rules, no participation in the EU's global arrangements or things like Euratom or the European Medicines Agency 🤒
/ The Maybot also declared this would mean significant savings as no future payments to the EU would be required. The wry follower may wonder what costs may come from leaving the world's largest single market and then paying to negotiate worse terms of access 😬
/ But to give the Maybot her credit she did not specify who would benefit from such savings. The cynical would assume those worried about the EU tax avoidance rules coming into force may be the ones making savings. You know folks like hedge fund managers...🤐
/ The truly cynical might take it to mean with a £60bn tax revenue black hole forecast by the OBR due to Brexit the savings really mean reduced public services. You know like dismantling the NHS 😱😱😱
/ The Maybot also was "very clear" in a letter to the Evening Standard that she was delighted to secure the rights of @The3Million @InLimboBrexit 👏while making clear to Parliament that nothing is agreed til everything is agreed 🤥🤥🤥
/ The Maybot also sought to reassure her evidence dodging Brexiter colleagues that she would only pay billions as a divorce settlement conditional on a future deal...
/ Even though paragraph 96 of the Great Capitulatory Fudge says no such thing 🤥ec.europa.eu/commission/sit…
/ The EU withdrawal bill continues its tortuous passage through the Commons with the Government agreeing not to use Henry VIII powers but agreeing to a sifting committee. Some felt that the existing Serious Fraud Office would be an adequate regulator👮
/ Tomorrow sees a debate on Amendment 7 and whether Parliament should be given a vote on the final deal. It should because, you know, Parliamentary Sovereignty 🙄
/ But there are other good reasons. For example, Cabinet has never discussed what it wants from Brexit (good job it triggered article 50 then) 🤡🤡🤡
/ Philip Hammond said to the Treasuary select committee there was "no specific mandating of the end point" making clear Cabinet did not consider it had a final mandate on the deal terms 😳
/ Jeremy Hunt inadvertently highlighted the risk of leaving the EU with a bad deal by tweeting his own impact assessment
/ The casual follower may also wonder why if there has been no discussion by Cabinet on the end point why the Maybot feels able to rule out staying part of the SM, CU, EEA, Euratom, EBA, EMA 😒
/ This concern may be heightened by the Great Disappearing Impact Assessments and the potential risk to all sectors of the UK 😩
/ Indeed the pharma and chemical sectors now made clear they quite like the EU regulatory system for the principal reason it works 👊👊👊
/ They have been added to a small list including academia, automotive, health care, banking, farming, retail, creative industries, defence manufacturing and all other sectors of the UK economy apart from Tate & Lyle 👏👏👏
/ Luckily the Government did recently conduct a thorough review of its relationship with the EU. Call them impact assessments if you like gov.uk/government/new…
/ Critical observers would note the conclusion that there was no real case for transferring powers back from the EU. 😳google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theg…
/ At this point some may be persuaded that Parliament should vote on the final deal and perhaps the option of remaining in the EU should be kept on the table 🤞
/ Especially when consumer inflation is now at 3.1% so the UK now has the highest inflation of any major EU economy. Oh and the lowest growth. Looks like Cretinus Maximus is indeed right about the need for calm 🤬🤬🤬
