14/ Thank you to those in Parliament who think now is the right time to replace the PM instead of allowing Parliament to vote on whether the proposed withdrawal deal is acceptable
15/ Thank you to those in Parliament who think the best policy is to let the Government trash the country on the basis it may get you into power. Thanks for putting your interests in power first.

@NickBoles with all due respect this is what GOV should have worked up before triggering article 50 and asked Parliament to support as a pragmatic compromise.

But no. And now the PM champions ending FOM - FOM would need to be (and should be) a key part of your plan.
But GOV refused to build consensus, stoked division with its “citizen of nowhere”, “bargaining chip”, “queue jumper” rhetoric, lies about the cost of Brexit and ignores breaches of electoral law
I think we should remain in the EU but would have accepted your proposal if that had been on the table from 24 June 2016. A pragmatic compromise.

Indeed your plan should have been the minimum baseline for the UK

I welcome your efforts to find a solution but...

1) While all versions of #Brexit under the sun are being thought about in Parliament there’s no whiff of the EU changing its position
2) EU member states are not (yet) discussing the possibility of a second referendum or an extension of article 50 negotiating time amongst themselves
3) Regardless of the result of the vote in parliament on 11th, the EU is adamant the deal on the table is the best compromise for both sides - they say they can and will go no further

1. Academic research by @ConUnit_UCL suggests that one needs around 6 M to hold referendum; the preparations to hold a vote include eg. pushing through legislation, assessing intelligibility of the Q on the ballot, preparing polling stations and securing the time for the campaign
2. The first possibility to instruct GOV to hold a vote would be when MPs vote on withdrawal agreement. Looking at the pace of the talks the deal (if it is reached at all) could be presented to Parliament the earliest in DEC; this means that the REF could be held around June/July

The reason we are in this mess...

Most MPs are useless party drones, collecting their pay and expenses, and voting the way they are told to.

When the #Brexit advisory referendum result was announced, the correct next step should have been a Parliamentary debate on whether...
...the UK should leave, or #RemainInTheEU. That, as far too few MPs will admit, is their job. They should make decisions on our behalf.

The majority of them know we should not leave the EU, because they know how much harm it will do to everyone but a few very rich people.
About 400 MPs think we should #RemainInTheEU, but most of that 400 think that hanging on to their seat, no matter how much harm they do, is the best thing to do. Because pay and expenses matter more to them than we do. Because they are scared of the whips.

THREAD: Today's events in Westminster - which relate to the process and not the substance of Brexit - do not change the fundamental mess and chaos of Brexit. The UK is heading for a bad Brexit deal but its not a done deal - a lot will happen between now and the Autumn. /1
Its disappointing the so called "Grieve 2" amendment did not pass this afternoon (I,of course, voted for it) but significant that Ministers were forced to climb down and issue a statement acknowledging Parliament's vital role at the end of the process. /2
There are still 5 #Brexit related Bills still to make their way through Parliament which are legally binding and amendable: Customs Bill; Trade Bill; Fisheries Bill; Agriculture Bill; and, Immigration Bill. There will also be a huge number of statutory instruments to pass too. /3
