THREAD: Will of Another: George Washington predicted Donald Trump and the modern GOP. His final words to the nation warned against their rise. Read on…
/ President George Washington sought to emulate the great Roman military leader Lucius Cincinnatus when he declined a third term as the leader of our young nation. He handed the power back to the people. And he left office with a stark warning to the American people.
/ President Washington wrote a farewell address which he addressed to his “Friends and fellow-citizens.” It was originally titled “The Address of General Washington To The People of The United States on his declining of the Presidency of the United States.”
/ Later it was simply referred to as his Farewell address. In it he warned (among other things) that “The union of states created by the Constitution will come under the most frequent and focused attacks by foreign and domestic enemies of the country.”
/ He was also greatly suspicious of politicians and the party system. He was right to be anxious. He wrote “I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the state.”
/ Washington wrote of the two-party system “The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.”
/ Washington feared the rise of an ego-maniac like Trump egged on by a greedy GOP. He wrote, “The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual…
/ "…and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation on the ruins of public liberty."
/ Think of that. President Washington knew in 1796 that a monster like Donald Trump who sought “absolute power” would become the “chief of the prevailing faction” and focus all his attention toward his own elevation at the expense of the people!
/ President Washington went further to explain what he felt would occur when Trump was given power, “It agitates the community with ill founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection.”
/ Again - President Washington PREDICTED that Donald Trump would rise to power on a wave of fake news, hysteria, animosity, fear mongering and hate. And he begged the American citizens to reject this kind of demagoguery. But that’s not all…
/ President Washington KNEW that Donald Trump would be influenced by the Russians! He wrote that a man like him would be influenced by a foreign power and would bow down to them at the expense of our citizens.
/ Washington wrote, “It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.”
/ Read that again. President Washington warned that when a man like Donald Trump is elected he is certain to sacrifice the will of our country and subject it to the policy and Will of Another. And that is EXACTLY what has happened.
/ Washington also warned of a single party holding the majority in all three branches of government for a fear of checks and balances breaking down. He was omniscient! That is exactly what is happening now!
/ He wrote, “The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one and thus to create, what- ever the form of government, a real despotism…
/ …A just estimate of that love of power and proneness to abuse it which predominates in the human heart is sufficient to satisfy us of the truth of this position.”
/ President Washington knew of Donald Trump’s “Love of Power and proneness to abuse it” if given the support of three branches of government.
/ Washington also knew that a man like Donald Trump would feign patriotism and religion while also working to subvert each of these…
/ He wrote “In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens."
/ Washington wrote of what he called “Avenues of Foreign Influence.” He asked, “How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practice the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the public councils!” PUTIN!
/ He wrote, “Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of government.”
/ President Washington didn’t think that the citizens of the young free America would believe him. He said so. And he asked the people of the nation to every once in a while reflect on his words.
/ He wrote, “But if I may even flatter myself that [these words] may now and then recur to moderate the fury of party spirit, to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism…
/ …this hope will be a full recompense for the solicitude for your welfare by which they have been dictated.”
/ He signed his farewell address by entrusting the citizens of the young democracy with “Our mutual cares, labors and dangers.” He signed it General Washington. He was far more a solider than a politician.
/ Our first president knew in his heart that in spite of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and Meticulously written constitution that our biggest threat would come from within.
/ Washington knew we would have a complicit and corrupt GOP like the one we have today. He knew a monster would rise to power in the mold of Donald Trump. A man beholden to a foreign power who is a “pretend-patriot” driven by greed and a lust for power.
/ President Washington begged the people he led to never sacrifice the will of our nation to the Will of Another. He knew this day would come.
/ We owe it to the founders of our nation, who empowered us with all of the tools we need as the Architects and Engineers of our country to take it back from the corrupt men and women in power.
/ We must end the corruption. We MUST throw these people out! Robert Mueller is doing his job. We must do ours and fight fight fight to win back this nation in 2018 and 2020. everything is at stake. My friends and fellow citizens, President Washington is counting on us!
