1/ In honor of today’s Supreme Court argument in an Ohio case that will decide if the state can remove you from voter rolls if you don’t vote, here’s an explainer thread for non-lawyers on some voting rights issues.
2/ First, there’s the idea of voter fraud. This means ballots cast by people who are not entitled to vote, for instance some felons, dead people or people who aren’t citizens. Trump created a commission to find voting fraud but they couldn’t find any.
3/ Voting fraud in federal elections is a federal crime. In my 8 years as US attorney in Alabama, we had only one allegation of voting fraud & it turned out to be false. During my GOP predecessor’s 8 years in office, there were no voting fraud cases. Fraud is exceptionally rare.
4/ Voter Suppression is the flip side of the coin. It means efforts to keep people who are entitled to vote from voting. Suppression takes many different forms and is widespread. It is often, but not always, intentional. I’ll give you some examples.
