Twitter, let's talk historical definitions. If someone is arresting women for being too poor, too old or too weird, that's a WITCH HUNT. If instead they are arresting men for being part of a powerful network with too much money and influence, that's a KNIGHT TEMPLAR HUNT.
A MCCARTHYITE WITCH HUNT is when someone says they're hunting Communists but instead spends most of their time bothering Jews. A TORCH & PITCHFORK MOB is for getting rid of B-movie monsters, some of whom are played by actors who can't get better work because of the McCarthyites.
The BURNING TIMES are not an actual thing, though they are the subject of several catchy songs by Inkubus Sukkubus.
Cunning men and women did exist, and generally made a living out of the healing power of taking people's money and sending them away feeling as if they had Done Something About The Problem, and also writing scraps of Psalms on bits of paper.
But they were about as much like modern witches as any random Attis cultist hanging around the Mediterranean in the first century BC was like a modern churchgoer, which is to say, they might have had a few phrases & symbols in common but they didn't mean the same thing by them.
Oh, sod, I got distracted by talking about witches and forgot the punchline, which is: this is GENE HUNT.
