Once upon a time a guy friend of ours was fighting with his girlfriend because he did something horrible. The details escape me but in the end he made up an elaborate story and somehow convinced her to give him another chance.

We were pretty skeptical she would believe such a ridiculous lie. But here's what he said:
"Sally, girls want to believe. Give them an explanation that isn't 'He doesn't love me' then they can let themselves forgive you. She didn't want to break up, she just needed a reason."

We all just stated at him. Because he was right. And I will never forget that.
And this is where we are with Trump and GOP base. Deniability no longer needs to be plausible or rational. It just needs to be vehement and consistent.

With this memo, even if there were every opportunity to debunk it, is all it takes for GOP, their base, and sympathetic media to disregard the entire Russia investigation. Never mind indictments or any other revelations, all they needed was something to pound the table about.

No one believes it. No one. But now they have their talking points and their rallying cry and a REASON to keep supporting Trump.

The base doesn't care what Trump does as long as he keeps hating on POC. And Trump's base is GOP base. They have to fall in line, give Trump whatever he wants, because they can't alienate their own voters and risk their own elections.

If you look at everything through this frame, it makes sense. So GOP looks the other way while Trump dismantles the federal government, while his family plunders the US Treasury like Bane Capital circa 2008, and now, even treason.

Sadly, it doesn't matter how many outraged citizens take to the streets, or how many phones ring off the hook in the Senate, because that ~31 is all that matters.

And Trump knows it. His lies become more outrageous, but they stay with him. They don't want to break up. They just need a reason to stay. And Trump gives them enough of what they need to keep them on the hook.

But we know how this story ends, don't we ladies? Eventually there's a lie so bad it undoes them all, and the scales fall from our eyes. We finally see the lying, cheating scumbag for who he really is. We'll never trust anything he says ever again.
