We’re awaiting a statement from the DOJ’s Rod Rosenstein, who is expected to discuss grand jury indictments re: Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Rosenstein: defendants engaged in information warfare to spread mistrust about the election and the system in general.
Rosenstein: Conspiracy operated through Russian shell companies, employing hundreds of people working on fake personas, graphics, SEO and translation.
Rosenstein: Defendants purchased space on US servers to set up a VPN to establish hundreds of social accts on FB, IG and Twitter to make it seem they were people in the US.
Rosenstein: They established social media pages and groups to engage with unwitting Americans, paying some to stage campaigns and rallies.
Rosenstein: Defendants instigated both a pro- and anti-Trump rally in NY on the same day.
Rosenstein: 8 criminal counts. 1 is to conspiring to defraud lawful elections.
Rosenstein: Count 2 is conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud; Count 3 identity theft.
There’s no evidence Americans were wittingly involved in the conspiracy, and there’s no evidence the conspiracy impacted the election result.
Rosenstein: This indictment shows Russia wants to sow discord in the US and undermine confidence in democracy. We will not allow them to succeed.
Rosenstein: There are no allegations in this document that any Americans had any knowledge of the conspiracy.
