Thread by @boothheather got me thinking. When Oklahoma City bombing happened, laws were passed & policies changed IMMEDIATELY. No daycares in and increased security in federal buildings. White House streets were blocked off. FOREVER. The *White House* was deemed unsafe. 1/
Organizational changes were made regarding and within the FBI. An anti-terrorism task force was formed. The FBI upgraded facilities & resources. Clinton initiated the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act to enhance penalties for terrrorism. This was one event. 2/
Tragic, horrific, but also as preventable and foreseeable as any mass shooting has been. Ex-military with mental issues and ties to white extremist groups that rode the gun circuit and spouted hate for government. He was a ticking time bomb. No pun intended. 3/
But a couple nut jobs blew the face off of a federal building and our government started making changes immediately. Some permanent. But school after school after school gets shot up and... and... thoughts & prayers. Thought & fucking prayers. 4/
A govt that made fundamental changes in reaction to a guy that hated the govt is acting like a govt that doesn’t care if it’s hated, but by the parents of dozens & dozens of dead kids (and many more of us that GAF) instead of some nut. That’s some rich irony, that. 5/
