I was asked what I thought the "obvious solution" was to the mass shootings. So here's my 2 cents:

-People should have to obtain a permit, contingent on passing a expanded background check, before buying a firearm. /1

-Ban felons or people with mental health problems from having weapons.
-Make sure that mental health covers ALL mentally sick people who have demonstrated a propensity for violence. Right now the only thing that is flagged is someone who has been involuntarily committed. /2

Well, many people have violent backgrounds and have not been committed. There should be a way to capture these people under this umbrella as well.
-Ban Assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
-Ban those on terror watch list from buying a gun. /3

-Raise the minimum age for buying a gun.
-Ban after-market products that convert weapons into automatic weapons. /4

-Guns should at least have the same requirements that people have for driving a car - register, license, demonstrate that you know how to operate safely, and periodic renewals and inspections.
Will this stop a bad person who really wants to kill someone from killing someone? /5

Probably not all of them. BUT NONE of these things infringe on anyone’s 2nd Amendment rights and it means that the killer at least has to jump through some hoops to execute his plan. /6

The more hoops he has to jump through, more likely he has a chance of being stopped. And if he gets a weapon, he will likely not be able to kill as many. /7

The law-abiding gun owner would be inconvenienced slightly w/ registration stuff, but small price to pay for lives saved. /8 fin
