The UK allows its quotas to be traded, and many UK entities chose to sell their quotas to other firms. Nearly 90% of the Welsh quota is held by Spanish firms, but this is the result of UK policy decisions. (2/x) thetimes.co.uk/article/foreig…
So the big question is, what changes do people wanting us to "take back control" of our waters actually expect? (3/x)
Do they want the government to renationalise the quotas that have been traded and effectively expropriate the firms that hold them? (4/x)
Do they just want reform of our domestic system, in which case is the common fisheries policy really the issue? (5/x)
As with most things connected with Brexit, it seems like yet another issue where emotive rhetoric crowds out any meaningful discussion about realistic policy trade-offs. (6/6)
