1/ The three stages of learning:

1⃣ Simplicity
2⃣ Complexity
3⃣ Simplicity

2/ Writing is like this.

Editing is over-looked and under-appreciated.

It's the most important question you can ask yourself about anything.

Edit, edit, edit.

Cut, cut, cut.

Publish when all that’s left is the point.
3/ Businesses thrive on artificial complexity.

Many companies offer complex solutions to simple problems.

@nateliason calls this The Law of Artificial Complexity:

As the number of people experiencing a problem increases, so will the artificial complexity of the solution.”
4/ Great teachers make things simple.

For example, think of a great fitness trainer.

They take the complex world of fitness, explain is simply, and teach you to work out on your own.
5/ Great art is not just about what you see.

It’s also about what you don’t see.

Not everything simple is elegant.

But everything elegant is simple.

Great artists discard what doesn’t fit.

They cut out what may have cost days or even years of effort.
6/ My favorite example.

Picasso once tried to capture the fundamental spirit of a bull.

Through a series of progressively simpler images, he begins with complexity and ends with simplicity.

Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
7/ Steve Jobs said it best.

"That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity.

Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.

But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
8/ The quest for simplicity begins with complexity.

When I write, I start with a messy and complex rough draft.

Then I focus on three things:

1⃣ Streamline the message.

2⃣ Focus the piece.

3⃣ Pare is down to its simplest, clearest, and easiest-to-understand form.
9/ Poor communicators ramble.

Good communicators leave out unnecessary details.

Great communicators treat words as the scarcest commodity.

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” —Hans Hofmann
10/ Making it look easy is hard work.

Last year, Aziz Ansari hosted Saturday Night Live.

To prepare, he performed more than 100 stand-up sets.

An insane amount for such a small performance time.

As @awealthofcs wrote, effort is the key to making something look effortless.
11/ I’ve read a lot about health and fitness.

For years, I thought health was too complicated.

But then, I distilled what I knew into three simple rules:

▶️ Break a sweat everyday.

▶️ Get enough sleep every night.

▶️ Eat food, mostly plants. Not too much.
12/ There are two kinds of simplicity.

“For the simplicity on this side of complexity, I wouldn’t give you a fig. But for the simplicity on the other side of complexity, for that I would give you anything I have.”

Oliver Wendell Holmes
