It speaks volumes that most police in California won’t even support a bill that requires they *attempt* reasonable alternatives before shooting people.
The dominant argument put forward by the police is that they should be able to shoot people unnecessarily. That shooting people unnecessarily is essential to keeping police and the public safe.
This argument is even more ridiculous than the NRA’s “good guy with a gun” argument. The police are saying we should give the “guy with a gun” legal cover to shoot people unnecessarily. They really don’t have a credible argument to make.

This isn’t hard to understand. A huge proportion of Americans who identify *ethnically* as Latino also identify *racially* as white and white people tend to vote Republican.
Here’s an example of how race structures the politics of Latinx voters. Lighter-skinned Latinx voters are much less likely to vote Democrat. Moving from darkest to lightest skin, the likelihood a Latinx voter voted Obama in 2012 drops from 97% to 43%. rubenson.org/wp-content/upl…
In that study, 78% of the lightest skinned Latinx voters identified *racially* as white compared to 31% of darker skinned Latinx. So the group of Latinx voters most likely to vote Republican is the group that overwhelmingly self-identities as white. But there’s more...

40% of all black men in the state of Florida just became eligible to vote *today.* Think about that.
Here’s how the 40% figure is determined. Estimates of the black population in Florida who have already completed their sentence range from 18%-28%. The Sentencing Project has 18%: sentencingproject.org/wp-content/upl…

New research shows a higher 28%: link.springer.com/article/10.100…
But the vast majority of those disenfranchised in Florida are men. Men are 93% of those currently incarcerated in Florida. So 18-28% of black people overall is more like 35-45% of black men in particular who were disenfranchised just a few hours ago and are now eligible to vote.

(1) The #California Legislature is panicking tonight. They're currently presented with a watered-down #ConsumerProtection bill that would require tech companies to disclose the data collected on users, and delete the data collected on them at request. leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavC…
(2) This bill poses a huge threat to the profits of FAANG corporations, and it poses a threat to the companies who rely on this data to sell advertisers and political groups analytics on prospective consumers/voters.

Why is it such a problem, though?
(3) The #CCPA is actually quite milquetoast, as it's written now. But if they don't pass this bill, California has a much bigger problem coming for them in November: the will of the people.

I grew up with working class parents in a conservative town in Ohio. I’m a political scientist. I am married to a black man from the rural South. Currently reside just outside DC. Context! 1/
Um, so, regular people from the middle of the country are probably right when they pick any political figure and call them a terrible person. Any of them. Either party. Strategic elites violate good person norms. 2/
And frankly, having grown up in a totally “everyday white American” environment, I feel icky on the regular in DC. We drive away from the area and I feel “cleaner.” The constant transactional interaction is really culturally jarring. 3/

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
