2. Reflected the large number of people who talked about community-building and expressed optimism at the opening session, not just the people expressing frustration (yes, cover that too b/c it's real, but in proportion)

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."

I wish I could have spent more time with each of you—but 100 people! At least twice what I was expecting.

I think the days of my tweeting “I’m at this bar come say hi!” are over, bittersweetly.
In the future I will have to get a real event organizer in the mix, a real venue, or else give out limited “tickets” so I know how big a venue we need.

Just got back from a trip to 🇨🇳 to attend the GMTC conference in Beijing. Thanks to the organizers and everyone who came to see my talk!

I learned a lot over the days that I spent talking to developers and exploring the city. Here are some things that really surprised me…
The first thing I noticed was how much people in China use their phone (even when driving). It’s more noticeable than in the US, for example. When asked about the new Screen Time feature in iOS 12, every person I talked to had the same response: “Why would you want that?”
To that end—WeChat is ubiquitous in China. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. Even Facebook in its heyday doesn’t come close. Glance over the shoulder of anyone using their phone, 99 times out of 100, you’ll see green chat bubbles.
